| | | | What other speaker can I put into a Peavey 1x15 cab?

OK! first of all, I have a 8ohm Peavey 1x15 ported cab with it's original "Black Widow" inside (Don't remember the series but it was in the $300-$400 range in 2005, about 26.75"h x 24.75"l x 20"w [exterior], and it's pretty heavy). It sounded good paired with an Ampeg 4x10 cab I used to have (I used to call that setup the refrigerator), but for economical reasons I sold the 4x10 (Which I regret).
As it is, it has a good tone, but when playing with a band I can't hear the bass and I'm forced to turn up the gain, volume and/or tweak the tone knobs to be able to hear myself. Basically, I have to sacrifice the tone I like, which is, the last thing anyone wants.
I assume a quick and cheap way to fix this is putting in there a speaker that has more output, but I have read in these forums that not every speaker works well with every cab. So my question is: In your experience with this particular cab, if any TBer has any, what aftermarket speaker can I put into this cab to get a better output from it?
Any other suggestion that fits within the $150 or less range is appreciated (money is sort of an issue right now ). |

| | | | I'm not sure about any particular speaker, but a possible way of going about finding a good speaker would be to measure the inside of the cabinet and figuring out it's internal volume and a few other specs. From there you would look for a list of speakers that would work well in that cabinet based on their optimal internal volume and porting and pick the best performing speaker from that list. Mind you it might be (probably is) more complex than that, just wait for someone more experienced than I am like bill fizmaurice or greenboy.

The average single 15 has around the same output as a 2X10.
Unless you are using a superior 15" like a 3015 (which would still have to be modeled to make sure it would even work in your cab), your best bet is adding another matching 1X15

| | | Wow! Thanks for the fast responses!
@Pie Man 25:
I'll try and do that for now, thank you.
@Bass Pounder:
I know buying another cab will solve my issue, but I can't do that right now (What I get from unemployment compensation is barely enough to pay my bills and get by [Hopefully by January I can find a decent job]). |

If you're patient, you can probably get another used peavey 115 for the same or less than a good new speaker. That will solve your problem. |

| | | | Hmmm... Haven't thought about that, I like that idea. Is it very common to see those cabs around that price range? |

"Black Widow Super Structure Specifications". Are the older models.
"BWX" with all the model #'s ending in "08" are the newer ones.
OP- with a little patience, you shouldn't have a problem finding peavey 115's for less than $200. The market is usually littered with them. |

| | | | If you can't hear yourself, try tilting the cab so it points at your ear.
Or raise it up on a table or chairs
It makes all the difference in the world, and it's cheap.

| | | | How about getting the 4 ohm version of the same speaker so the head can produce more wattage? (It's a Peavey Max 450 head)
Btw. I just found out that the cab is a BVX 115. |

Btw. I just found out that the cab is a BVX 115. | No, waste of money. In nearly every case, more speakers gets you louder than more watts does. Unless it's a totally lopsided example like using a 50 watt amp on a 3015LF or something. |

| | | | OK, another used 8 ohm BVX 115 is the way to go. Thank you all for saving me all the unnecessary hassle. You guys are the best! |

| | | | I think at least for the time being doing what seamonkey says and just putting it on a chair or table or tilting it upward would solve the problem.
