What program do you use to match a speaker with a given cab?

I want to upgrade my SWR Baby Baby Blue II 10" speaker with a lighter weight neo. I have tried four separate times to get a replacement golight speaker from Fender but I have not been able to get it. Truth is, I don't know if it would work well anyways as I don't have any specs on those drivers...

The cabs dimensions aren't great but I think I should be able to find something that works in there. I know the PAS drivers are fairly efficient so I'd like to do my best to match their efficiency but with more excursion.

Internal dimensions are:

12.25" W X13" HX11.25" D

and a port 12.25" W X 1" H X 3.625" D

Any thoughts on the best program to use to help find a driver for this cab? I'm hoping to find something by Eminence or B&C.

It gives you a lot more to work with that just volume. It will show you a shape and allow you to add dimensions to it to work out internal volume for you. It also has a feature where a lot of the drivers it has in it's database also have a frequency response plot. This means when you plot it in the box you have designed, it will show you any anomalies in the driver response (ie an odd peak at 2k, regardless of box size or tunings). I have used WinISD a few times and can't really get to grips with it, but BBP6 seems very natural to me.

It's personal choice, but if you're struggling with one, try the other

Thanks for this thread. I never have messed with changing out speakers for other than stock, so this could come in handy for me to learn more.

WinISD Alpha Pro is free. I doubt the OP wants to spend $149 on a program he may use only once. And as he's already got the box in hand he doesn't need to calculate any dimensions.

Thanks for the responses guys. I gave WinISD a shot before i started this thread and found it was designed more for designing a cab around a speaker and has left me a little lost because I'm going the other way around. I couldn't figure out how to input my port dimensions as they seem to be too big for the program to accept.

Edit- I eventually got WinISD to do what I wanted by starting off with entering the correct port dimensions and adjusting the box tuning frequency until I got my port depth. It's a little cumbersome but it worked. Thanks again fellas.

You would choose the square port option and enter the size as 12.25 x 1. Then go back to the box screen and move the tuning up and down going back to the vent screen and checking the length it gives you each time. Whatever number you entered as the tuning frequency on the box screen that gave you a length of 3.625 on the vent screen is your tuning frequency for your current box.

WinISD sometimes overshoots the actual tuning freq. in slot/shelf ports like that, especially one with a very narrow dimension like 1". Tuning will often end up a bit lower than predicted.

This thread Cab building question about shelf port length... has some math in it to correct for that as well as the link to this online calculator Car Audio - PORT Size Calculations and Formulas for WOOFER and Subwoofer BOXES said to be more accurate.

If you're having problems with it accepting your port, make sure you have all your measurements set to the same inches or millimeters or whatever. Make sure you're telling it your port is 1 inch high, not 1 foot.

When you reverse engineer like this, you pretty much have to find a bunch of different drivers and see how they'll work in your box. Some you can toss out right away based on specs, others you'll have to load up and model against each other.

Wow. Thanks for all the great info Will! I have successfully chosen an appropriate replacement for my combo. The Eminence Deltalite 2510 was by far the best replacement for this application. There were some other drivers that looked good but the 2510 could handle more power and x-max. Those programs really work because in practical use, I couldn't be happier with the performance of this combo now. It puts the old PAS driver to shame in every way. Tone, efficiency, power, articulation. It's the whole package. Thanks again to all who posted their usefull experience and knowledge. TB is the best!
