| | | | What RackMount Preamp to Buy??? Well, I went to order a michael pope mpp1 and apparently theyre discontinued, so I'm in the hunt for a preamp. I have my eyes on the eden wp100 navigator, or the alembic f-1x.
My current setup is:
Modulus quantum 5, 25th anniversary edition w/ bart soapbars.
- often use a pick
going to have a rack setup w/
-furman PC
-tuner
- ****(either the navigator, or f-1x, or what YOU may recommend)
- QSC GX7
So basically, what would you all recommend for a pre-amp out of these two or any others you can think of?? |

If you are near SW Ohio you can try out my Alembic F-1X. |

Demeter HBP-1 is great.
You mentioned Alembic, but the BBE Bmax T is a really good clone for a lot less.
The Tech 21 RBI is really good also.
GC has a used Rabe era SWR Grand Pre for cheap. |

| | Registered User | | | | Tech 21 SansAmp RPM. I can't believe I'm the first to recommend it. Great tube emulation, parametric EQ (so you can fine tune those ever important mids), Drive so you can put some edge on it (if that's your thing). DI out for your FOH with adjustable output and dry and effected outs. Dry line out you need it. Effects loop. Blend, dry and effected. Optional foot switch. Dude, if you can't find your tone with it, it doesn't exist. . I would have gotten one myself, but I wanted parallel channels, so I got two ParaDrivers (the cheaper, pedal version of the RPM). If I had the coin, I would have purchased two RPMs. With a RPM and a good power amp, you can rule the world. (well, maybe not rule the world, but you will sound effen amazing!) In the interest of full disclosure, I have not been compensated by Tech 21 (but I'm open to it ), I just love the product. IMHO.

A good midrange would be an Aguilar DB659 or used Kern or Pierce. A good high end would be the JGR, the new Port City bass pre, or the Aguilar DB680. It is up to you. The 680 gets my vote for versatility. The JGR is a sweet hand made one off, sonically close to the 680 with less eq. The BmaxT and Port City are close to the F1 with fender type tone stacks, but may be limited in their tonal variety. Same with SWR and its cleanliness. The Pierce and Kern are right in the middle. I would mention Demeter but they retain their value and are not as nice sounding as the kern or pierce for the money.

I've always considered the SansAmp RPM to be a "safe" buy: relatively inexpensive, sounds good, and built like a tank. I keep one as a primary in one rack, a pre-PSA in the other.

Out of your two choices.......either would be great
Eden 2 rack spaces.....Alembic 1 space
Eden ..compressor Alembic...no
Eden para EQ Alembic...passive EQ
Personally, I would buy the Alembic......love my F2b

| | | | You may also consider "Ampeg SVP-PRO" and "Ampeg SVP-CL". They are rackmount tube bass preamps and both are also discontinued.
SVP-PRO is the preamp of "Ampeg SVT-II Pro" head
and SVP-CL is the preamp of classical all tube "Ampeg SVT" heads.
Many like the tone of SVP-CL as being clearer and noiseless. However I prefer SVP-PRO due to its more tonal options. And finally can say that their dreadful noise and hum of SVP-PRO's can be "tamed" by using good tubes almost completely. |
