What should I get?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey y'all I'm new on here and I was wondering what amp should I get to replace my old crate combo. I'm about to go to college and I play around a good bit, so it should be something of pretty good quality, and the main thing for me is good slap tone and good range projection because I play 5 and 6 string basses.

Roughly 6-7 hundred, and I'd go used no problem

answering your question is like picking out a girlfriend for you. with no idea of how loud you want to be, or how much room you'll have to store it, or how much weight are you willing to carry, you're going to get a hundred different suggestions. once you tell people more specifically what you want, you may get it whittled down to 50 or 60

the good thing, though, is that there is a lot of very nice stuff in that price range, especially used. stay away from the lowest tier cabs and you should be able to find a nice rig. but you're really going to have to go out and play some stuff at the stores to have any idea what to get.

Thanks man. What would you suggest for around 400 watts for pretty loud playing, like in a large auditorium? I'm playing in the Hammerstein Ballroom soon, for example.

And weight isn't an issue. If it's heavy, I'll put wheels on it haha.

svt/810, but that's a little over your budget

i would do at least a 410, 212 or two 210's, maybe a couple 115's. but probably wouldn't go any smaller than that. and there are a butt-ton of heads on the market that will do it at a low cost. i tend to favor ampeg stuff, but there are literally a butt-ton of good inexpensive amps out there. pick the one you like the most.

Thanks again man! Ampegs we're recommended to me by a friend who works at Guitar Center as well, so I'm definitely going to check some out.

That kind of money will go a ways with GK gear also.

At the guitar center near my house, there's a 4x10 cab used for I think around 200. Is it worth it?

It depends on which version of the cab is, and its condition. Play it...

Checkout the GK MB212 combo....light, powerful in your price range and should meet your stated needs with margin.

Best thing you can do now is take your bass down to GC on some slow afternoon (NOT the weekend...Tuesdays are good) and play thru everything you think you can afford. Let your ears tell you what you want.

GC is always pushing their 30 no risk policy. This might be the to take advantage of it...

edit - looks like it's part of GK's "entry level" line, and rated at 400 watts at 8 ohms

Well, I'm one of those weirdos that insists on being brand consistent. That way, if there are issues down the road, you won't have an amp manufacturer saying "We blame the cab", and a cab manufacturer saying "We blame the amp" These components are tested with like branded components. So I say start there.

I'm assuming that the 410 you speak of is this:

Welcome to Gallien-Krueger: Power to Groove

So, I will quote "The BLX cabinets are the ideal match for the Backline 600 head or as an extension for Backline 210 combo"...

So I say start with:

Welcome to Gallien-Krueger: Power to Groove

or the 210 of this:

Welcome to Gallien-Krueger: Power to Groove

Don't thank me thank google...

+1 for taking YOUR bass to guitar center to play through the amps. Whatever sounds good to you, but GK or Ampeg are pretty safe choices no matter what you get IMO.
