What Speaker is in the MB112?

Sign in to disble this ad
I love my new Mb112 and am wondering if it has the 12" paragon or a neo speaker in it? With the cost of neos going up, I imagine it is a paragon. If that is so, at 28 lbs. just imagine how light it would be with a neo in it. has anyone put a neo in their mb112 and checked the difference in weight?

I've read GK makes their own drivers in their own factory in China
Open it up and take some pictures
I'd be curious to see.

Go to Eminence's web-site.
According to it, GK's speakers are built by them.

Funny, when you go to the off-the-shelf products and choose bass guitar, there is only one 12" speaker listed: BASSLITE™ S2012

I wouldn't have a clue how much the 12" in GK's MB112 weighs, but the Basslite is barely over 4 lbs. Do y'all figure the OEM would come in a lot heavier??

From what I can tell, the speaker in the MB 112 is not a Neo. I believe that if one replaced that speaker with a Neo, the MB112 would weigh 4-5 lbs. less. So around 23-24 lbs. Wouldnt that be even sweeter? I wonder if GK might entertain the thought of offering an MB112Neo for a few more bucks. Just an idea. --- and maybe an MB115Neo?

Eminence used to make G-K's speakers. RAG has stated more than once that G-K now builds 99% of their own drivers in their own factory. Just for info .
I would also be interested. It appears from the product lit. it is a ceramic driver.

Both the MB112 and MB115 use a ceramic magnet with a two inch edge wound aluminum voice coil.

I thought most GK speakers were Paragon? I remember really high end stereo and theater systems used to use Paragon speakers in the day. Nothing sounds like 'em.

The Paragon you are thinking of was an old JBL model. The Paragon was a monster big piece of furniture IIRC. GK labeled some of their drivers 'Paragon' much later. Not sure if GK built those of if they were OEM'ed for them.

JBL Paragon

Holy moly. That is a monster! But no the paragon hi-fi system I'm talking about looked like the old technics or fisher stereos. With the column style speakers on either side of the components. The backs of the magnets actually said paragon on them.

The idea of knocking a few pounds off the total weight of the MB112 is *very* appealing. But the MB112 uses a 4 ohm speaker, and 4 ohm, 12", 200+ watt neodymium bass (40 Hz) speakers are hard to find. In fact, I can't think of a single one. Anybody know of any?

You could put in an 8 ohm Neo bass speaker like the Eminence Basslite S2012, but then the power would drop to 140 watts.

Thanks Bob! Edge wound nice!
Jon

For those that have not met RAG, he started (as GMT I believe), still owns, operates and designs G-K.
