I just got done shooting out a TC electronics rig and a Hartke Hydrive stack.

Although I love the portability of the TC, The Hartke just had more tone. Punchy at the edges but a big fat core to the sound. I found the TC to sound great but it lacked some punchiness at the edges.

Just my two cents.

That is an awesome stack. My stomach feels a little sick just thinking about standing in front of that at full volume.

So... how long do you want to save for, and how much will you save?
$1000?
$2000?
$10,000

There will be different answers. As there will at $500 and $800.

Stating a few bassists or bands whose tone you admire will also help people guide you.

I don't care about money I'll save it slowly. I admire A7X, Flea and anything else like that

From my experience, you don't even need a stack, I've found that a good 100-200 watt combo is more than enough for most situations, and just about all the bars I've been in. Of course, outdoor gigs are completely different, but I would just stick with a 120 watt combo or a good 200 watt head and a solid 410.

The only thing anyone can really recommend is to play through several amps and find the one you like most and can afford. You seem pretty new to bass, but the simple truth is, what works for the bassist in A7X or Flea might not work for you, or might be out of your price range. There is a good list of things you should keep in mind when looking for a bass amp - power/volume, size, weight, and of course money.

I would recommend checking out your local music store or perhaps your local classifieds first, I've gotten a great deal of stuff used.

I'm not new to bass. I'm new to pedals and amps(I used to use a practice amp, now I use my guitarist' old amp). Very helpful info, thanks

im more than satisfied with my eden wt550 and 2x10xlt + 2x10xst, but in terms of sound/portability i'd go with a genz-benz shuttle 9.0 and bergantino 4x10.

The cab is the most important, and the biggest investment as a bassist by far. Buy lightly used if possible, because good used cabs can be a steal. I recommend 610's or more for heavy music.

New power is cheap, and light. Most companies are catching on to the pedal pre deal, and/ or micro heads. Just find something you like.

GK 410RBH and a GK 700RB head. That will get you the majority of the Flea tone, now just play like him for the rest of the tone.....LOL! Try that rig out and have fun! A single 410 or two 410's is a good idea.

Try some stuff out at a music store and tell us what you like. We can guide you from there. Look up your favorite artists and see what they use in a live setting. Check out their gear in concert pictures. If you do not know what gear they are using, post a link to the pic and we can help you out. Youtube videos of live performances are sometimes really helpful.

For the hard rock metal band you are in, I think you should steer clear of a combo amp. It will limit you and will be a waste of money.

^This is the first thing that crossed my mind. Loud, classic sound, bulletproof. It should cover at least 90% of the gigs on earth and likely 100% of the indoor ones.

I tend to agree with the guys that say a combo is a waste of time for you. Unless you spring for a bigger combo and an extension cab (which is the more expensive route) you run the risk of getting buried at the non-PA gigs.

I have to through the Traynor hat in the mix here... I went from a GK700BRII with a NEO212 cab to a DB400H (now a YBA-200) and a TC1510 .. about the same cost for the gear (give or take a couple bucks) and I like the tone/punch from the Traynor better.
The TC cabs are tight, punchy and very affordable. Try one at the very least. Absolutely love mine and couldn't be happier changing from GK
Not to knock GK.. it really is rock solid gear!

As both Flea and Johnny Christ (A7X's Bassist) are endorsers of Gallien Krueger amps and cabs you might want to take a look at them first?

But, seriously, I would suggest you go out and try a bunch of different heads and cabs and see what you like the best.

Peavey Tour 700 head, with Peavey VB 115cab, and 2 x 10 or 4 x 10.
