What would you clean old tolex with?

If this belongs somewhere else, sorry. It's an amp so I figured.....

So I got an old V4 (story here New old amp day! Ampeg V4 question)

The tolex has a really thin layer of grease on it. It almost seems as though the amp was stored beside the fryer at a restaurant for a year or so. It's just a bit gooey. So what would I use to get that clean without getting it too wet?

Thanks.

Isopropyl alcohol is quite good, it won't eat the original tolex or melt the adhesive but you know about ventilation and stuff, don't drink it.

Simple Green or Spray Nine. Try a spot first.

Edit: I see you might be cleaning painted surfaces? Careful with the Spray Nine - serious stuff.

For grease, oil, or just plain "dirt" try Dawn dishwashing liquid and a soft scrub brush. Won't damage anything unless you use too much water.

Clean with Dawn and then wipe it down with Lemon Pledge. I use LP on on everything from my motorcycle and helmet to cleaning furniture to you name it. It's a little like duct tape and WD-40 for me.

+1 on the Lemon Pledge. I had a car detailing business for a while and used it on everything inside - chrome, wood, plastic, vinyl, and leather with great results. Of course it is great for guitars, too.

What seems like grease can be accumulated gunk on the amp. Sometimes a layer of the vinyl can break down and leave the amp feeling that way. Either way try cleaning it.

I would start with the least aggressive treatment. Mild dish soap and water. Use a rag or a soft brush. Clean the cabinet inside and out. Some of the stain inside the cabinet will come off, no big deal.

They used a water soluble glue to affix the vinyl so be careful at the edges. If water creeps under the vinyl it will start to peel back. If it happens, you can re-glue it.

Pledge is for furniture, not vinyl. 303 vinyl protectant is about as good as it gets. Armor-All is disgusting.

This. You can always try a more aggressive cleaning method if a gentle one doesn't work. If you scrape it down to the underlying fabric on your first try, there's nothing you can do at that point.
