Just curious what you would choose for equipment if you were a bassist in a Reggae band.

A good preamp, a powerful PA amp and a pair of Acme B2s.

IMO the amps aren't so much as important as the bass and playing technique. Most the reggae artists i've seen come through here (see my location) don't walk with rigs, they play through what's here and always sound great (and the setup is typically an Eden, SWR or Gallien Krueger head with a 4x10 and a 1x15 SWR cabs...that said, any bass with a solid (not hollow sounding), fat bottom and low mids will do just fine.

An active bass is typical around these parts (hardly see any reggae/calypso/soca bassists playing passive basses IME) for more modern reggae (reggae from the late 80's onwards IMO) but a Fender with flats work well too (that's what Familyman used on most of the Bob Marley stuff if I recall correctly).

any and everything works for me. i have no preference as long as the specs rule out absolute failure. some stuff is clearly better, yet...

You can see what I have on my signature. I picked up a 2-15 80's Carvin Cab with new(er) Delta Pros for a hundred dollars six months ago . It was going to be a project cab for a keyboard player. He just decided to get a full range cab so it was my gain . I had just bought an Eden WT - 400 awhile earlier for $400. Stellar reggae rig for the price of $500.

Ah, interesting question...

A Carvin B1500 head, driving a fEarful 15/6 cab (containing the famous Eminence Kappalite 3015LF woofer), plus another fEarful 15/6, plus a fEarful 1x15 sub.

That's three of those great 15" woofers - vertically stacked - being driven at approximately 550 watts each, at a total impedance of 2.67 ohms. That ought to do the trick...

My Jazz through my LH500 and my Schroeder 1212. I was in a reggae band until last month.

No point trying to do the heavy lifting with backline gear, leave it to FoH to shake the room, if you produce a ton of bass on stage you won't be able to hear anything anyway.

All that said, it seems Alex at Barefaced is now doing a dedicated cab for reggae players. I've only seen one user's feedback about it so far but I would imagine it does the job as well as anything.

Which you don't need 15" speakers to get.
