What are your settings on your Fender Bassman 300??

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got one (Off a fellow TBer here ) and I plugged in and got some awesome tone. Granted it was in my apartment at 10pm and on a volume of .5 as to not wake the neighbors or rattle my light fixtures.

I think I got the EQ dialed in pretty good which is subject to change at "gig" volume but I have no idea what to do with the compressor.

For those of you who have (or had) this AMAZING head, what settings did you use?

I'll take a picture of my settings tomorrow. I use it and love it.

Yes, I love a bit of subtle compression. In fact, before my GK blew up, I had a DBX compressor in my rack. Problem is, the way the knobs are it doesn't make sense to me in logical compression terms... or at least the instruction manual is rather misleading.

@xjeremiahx thank you kindly!

I use a Bassman 250 with two 10's and I pretty much play it flat. Of course, I also use a Sansamp, so I'm getting a lot of tone from that. Not exactly the same amp, I know, but when I heard mine in the store before I bought it, I thought it was classic Fender. That tone from flat settings sold me on it.

Well, as usual, play with whatever settings sound good

I too, like to know what is a more or less flat eq on the amps I can use and tweak from there. The problem on these Fender style tone stacks is that 5-5-5 is definitely not flat. I believe that it varies somewhat from model to model and I've not had great luck trying to find definitive info on this. If memory serves correct the low/high are mostly boost and the mid is mostly cut so everything at 5 is actually pretty mid-scooped.

I just looked on my Music Man amp, which one might consider a descendant of the Fender designs, I have the mids at about 6 with the high/low around 4. These stacks are very interactive. Rather than any really systematic approach to eq'ing, I just seem to fiddle with Fender style amps until it sounds good. I do use a 6 band eq on my pedal board to fine tune my tone anyways. It's a lot less voodoo with my solid state amps.

Channel 1 Vol:4ish
Bass: 5/6 or so
Treble: 10
Graphic EQ: boosted half Frowny face, with highs ups and lows closer to flat
Deep: Engaged
Bright: Engaged

Don't really use any of the other gizmos, though I'll occasionally switch in Ch. 2, cranked to 10, for some good fuzz.

My settings are Channel 1 - 6.5, Bass - 8, Treble - 8, I don't use the boost switches, and I don't use the mid notch, but I do engage the EQ, those settings are 31.5 between flat ( center dent ) and the first line, 63 to the first line, 125 just above the first line, 250 at the first line, 500 between the thcenter dent and the first line, 1K just a hair above the center dent, everything else is at the center dent ( flat ). ... these settings are boost, I match the trim to taste, I don't use the compressors, when I want alittle dirt from channel - 2 that setting is at 7, and I use the blend set at 6 . this is hooked you to a Berg. NV610, with a Fender American Deluxe P-Bass ... I also use the active tone controls on the bass to fine tune the tone, as needed

Because I'm use to playing solid state amps, my brain wont allow me to crank any given know so I seem to habitually run my settings pretty conservatively...

I'm trying to get out of that and tell myself that "Its tubes... it can handle it..."

Also I'm finding that because I play Warwicks, its a little too much at 500. I don't want to use the mid scoop, cause I know I'll loose myself in the mix if I do. So I just boost the bass, and engage the deep switch to round out the bottom, no boosting highs cause I play with a pick (usually) and notch out a bit of 500. That sounds the way I want it too.

Its pretty sterile at low volumes, cause I'm guessing when I play this show this weekend and I get to see how she does when rubber meets the road, the power tubes should fill out the rest.

I hope...

Oops. Didn't see the whole subject line until now. You're talking about the new models, I was talking about the old school Bassman amps. I don't know anything about those amps, disregard my previous statement.

The low and hi EQ are flat at the center detent on the 300 Pro according to the manual.
