The best doesn't exist.... Only different flavors..... what kind of sound are you going for? Aerosmith?

he often used a Music Man bass, a Fender Precision Bass, a Fender Jazz Bass, or a Gibson Thunderbird..... I think he use a Hartke back in the 80's... not sure what he uses now....

If I was going to start from scratch again I would get a Tech 21 Sansamp rack mount and a moderate power amp, both used. This will give you a lot of options and the Sansamp sounds killer. Any power amp 500w+ will be more than enough, you will add more volume by adding cabinets or getting a cab with more sensitive drivers.

I would do something like this:
Pre:
Tech 21 Sansamp RBI Rackmount Bass Tube Amp Emulator: Shop Bass & Other Musical Instruments | Musician's Friend

Power:

Peavey IPR 1600 Power Amp: Shop Pro Audio & Other Musical Instruments | Musician's Friend

Cab:

Peavey VB-810 800W 8x10 Bass Speaker Cabinet: Shop Bass & Other Musical Instruments | Musician's Friend

Im clearly partial to the Peavey brand, but it has never done me wrong. This would sound killer as the sansamp is amazing, and be louder than anyone really needs but could be expanded on easily.

toss in a rack case, and some cables to put everything together and you are good to go.

Shop used and you can bring the price tag down dramatically.

G-K Backline 600 and GLX 4-10 cabinet works great for me. I think I paid around $700 for it.

A couple of years ago, Tom Hamilton was using a custom all-tube Ampeg rig...

He has used LOTS of different basses, and (if I recall correctly) has a huge personal collection.

Now, mind you, those rigs on the left and right are dummies (i.e., only the middle cabs actually work), and the heads are actually rack-mounted Ampegs you can't see in this photo...

An amp is a rig...

Are you looking for a head and cabinet, just a head (do you already have a cab?), or a combo amp?

There has been some used TC Electronic RH450 heads for under $500 which is a steal. You can mate that with any cab or cabs you like and have a powerful, lightweight and flexible rig.

if you do some hard digging on ebay and other sites you can get an Ashdown Little Bastard and an Ashdown 212 for about $900...this the best rig I've ever owned and I've owned SWR/Ampeg/tech 21/GK/TC Electronic

I think the best rig for $800 is an SVT with two 8-10 cabs. Who you would get it from, for $800, I don't know...

Used GK RB-series or Ampeg SVT3-Pro head + Avatar 410 or 212 cab.

Or...

Search your local craigslist for "bass amp". When you find something that catches your eye, come back to TB and do a seach for that amp to see what people are saying about it.

this is easy...
GK 700rb-ii - $400 used
SWR Goliath (I,II or III...depending on what tone you like) - no more than $400 used

highly versatile, tough/long lasting, and any bassist who saw you playing thru this would respect you
