What's the BEST cabs to pair with Shuttle 9.0

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking at purchasing a Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0, and am wondering which brand of cab would best suit the power this amp provides.

I'm definitely going the 2 cab route utilizing the 8 Ohms per cab. I am sort of partial to Epifani (possibly (2) UL210's), but am open to all brands.

I must stipulate that the lighter the better, so no heavy stuff.

Thanks guys!

EDIT: I should mention that the style of music will lean toward classic rock, and no slap, just finger picking. I like lows, but also like to hear what I'm playing. Also most of the time there will be minimal if any PA support, so this setup has to fill some small to medium sized rooms. Oh and my budget? Well there really isn't one...

If you've got the Epifani UL210 budget, I'd go with two of Duke from AudioKinesis' Thunderchild cabs.

I can't speak to it yet, but my money is headed towards two of the new Acme 1 X 12's. I have a really hard time believing its not gonna be awesome!

Thanks for all your input, but I'm looking for more than just a list of everyones favorite brands. I want specifics like (2) Genz Benz 2x10 ubers, and why. Keep 'em coming.

Have LDS build you 4-ohm fEARful 1212/6/1 or 1515/6/1 and you'll never need another cab again. It can do everything from soft and smooth to louder than heck to "where'd the roof go?" Power that with the 900 watts from the 9.0 and you'll be in bass heaven. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNZdhoNxW2I

That's what I'm talking about! I want to find the best and LIGHTEST cabs that can handle the 900 WATTS at 4 Ohms. Preferably (2) 8 Ohm cabs.

Check out this thread on the fEARful cabs. fEarful™ 12/6 & 15/6 enclosure designs - FREE! (Part VI: Electric Boogaloo)
There are many different configurations to choose from. They were designed by TB member Greenboy. There are lots of fEARful threads on TB. Get someone to build it exactly to spec and there are few commercially available cabs that can touch it.

I run my Shuttle 9.0 with two Schroeder 15+L cabs. Very lightweight (about 32 lbs each if memory serves) and can handle the wattage. Not as warm sounding as the Berg cabs, but very transportable. I can put the amp in a gig bag on my back and have a cab in each hand, which usually means just one trip from the car to the gig.

I like the Bergantino AE line of cabs with the Genz Shuttle heads quite a bit. The AE cabs are a bit bright and tight and a bit grindy, just like the Genz Shuttle. Not a huge low end bloom like the Epifani, but real kick you in the chest thump and a nice grindy top end that really allows 'the windings on the E string' to reach the audience.

For a two cab solution, the AE210 x 2 is very nice... REALLY small 210s' (only about 12" deep), and a bit taller than most (offset 10's) so you can stack them in 'regular' position, and they will be just a touch taller than a 410... great for near field monitoring.

The only downside IMO is that the very nice looking water based roll-on covering is a bit fragile. Zero issue if you get the nice padded covers, but they are a MUST with these cabs.

The Epifani UL210's are quite large, not quite as lightweight as they used to be, and have a very deep low end, polite mids, and a very airy top end... so, virtually the opposite of the AE line.

I use my 9 with a variety of Ampeg cabs, all are 4 ohm.
A PB210 fitted with Eminence legends, a 410HLN, PR-410HLF, and an 810E. My favorite is probably the 410HLN due to size and weight for the output. I confess to not having compared them to any of the boutique cabs, mainly because I am happy with the tone and output that i get now. I am very happy with the Shuttle. My WT400 has been relegated to backup status.

I wouldn't worry about the wattage so much. Most recommend a bit more rated power from the head than the cabs can take anyway. And, while the Shuttle 9 hammers pretty well, it does not have the ooomph and feel of a big, high powered lead sled. So, no danger in using a cab or cabs with the typical 600 to 750 watt 'max power rating' IMO and IME.

Per the above comment, the 12/6/1 cabs are pretty cool sounding if you like it wide and smooth and crisp and clean, and my guess is they are a good match with the tight and bright Shuttle (haven't heard that combination). They have their own sound (not really my thing), but they go quite low and have a very pristine, even upper mid response. I wouldn't worry too much about the 'exact' fEarFul' spec. I've played quite a few of these made by Low Down Sound, and they all sounded very similar, even though the size and configuration changed a bit among them.

The SWR Golight stuff sounds good. Like 38lbs I think, but feels lighter. I had a single 2x10, but went to the Marcus Miller Golight 4x10 recently. Both worked great for me. A pair of Golight 2x10s would sound great.

call Genz benz and ask the guy that built the amp- mr ginzler is usually answering the phone and spends time with his customers.

I've heard loads of rave reviews on the Genz Uber series and Berg AE series with the 9 as well.

Best of luck!

Barefaced ships overseas now. The rig certainly wouldn't be inexpensive, but it must sound amazing! I own a Berg AE and I think right now, only a couple Barefaced offerings and Duke Lejeune's designs could drag me away from it. The Genz sounds great too!

edit: Or a fEarful, really
