I love the Fender Bassman 20. 18 watt 1x15 combo of smooth clean tone. All handwired American made in the early 80s get them used for 400 or 500 bucks.

This should have been posted in the "Amps" forum. Ask the Mods to move it, and you'll have better luck.

Great friggin' combo. I LOVE them, but it's just too damn tough to move. Would rather a head/cab setup for versatility's sake.

This. I had the 2x10 and it was an awkward tote. One of the best live bass tones I've heard was an indie rock band whose bassist used a Buster 1x15. It was deep, clear, and glorious. I really like my Buster head that I yanked from a combo but not the combo itself. I just couldn't manage to EQ the cab's boxyness out with the Buster.

Are you looking new? Not many choices, but Ashdown has a few.

Used, I'd check out Ampeg B-15 (gonna have to be pretty beat up to get under your price limit), Pignose B-100V, and Trace Elliot Twin Valve Combo.
