I've run a GK RB700II amp into GK Neo cabs for years. I have only good things to say about the equipment. But sometimes it's nice to try something else, stir the pot, so-to-speak.
What amp would be on the tonally opposite spectrum of my GK? |

I promise
and a MUCH better match for NEO cabs. Sometimes the combination of super hi fi amps & cabs is too much. I like to only have 1 GK product, not both at the same time. Try the Streamliner on your NEO cabs & you'll be surprised they can sound like that

Or, if you have lots of money, buy an SVT-VR. That'll be different.

Just about any non-GK amp will sound very different from the RB700II.

The yba200 that I replaced it with had a fraction of the CLEAN headroom and did not feel as sturdy at all. My new TC Classic 450 is what I would describe as the opposite of the GKs tonal footprint. Rolled off highs and no bass extension to speak of. The classic/rh450 just has an amazingly detailed/punchy/ chewy midrange. It's tubetone overdrive and poweramp sag is also way different to the GKs dry snarl(give). Both great amps that I could easily live and gig
with.
And to echo the thoughts of the poster above, modern amp plus crispy Gk NEO cabs equals a very very bright sound.

I do this with my very modern studio sounding SWR Baby Baby Blue II and it's like playing a completely different amp. You should really give a VT Bass a try first. |

Add a VT pedal in front, and you've got just about all the tones you could want covered. I have a hard time thinking there is anything at the opposite end.
There's a lot more to the tone than just what the amp/cab does. Alot comes from properly matching up your gear (bass/strings, pedals, etc). And even more importantly, a lot of it comes from your hands. I love when a bass player comes up to me between sets swearing my rig sounds like it's being powered by a tube head. Conversely, I've heard players whacking away with tube gear, and not sound any better for it.
For a tonal shake up, you might want to try a pedal, or string type change. Certainly, it's cheaper than a new rig. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
