What's your favorite speaker cab? - Why??

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm going to be in the market for a new speaker cabinet in the near future. I was just wondering what some of your favorite speaker cabinets were and why.
I usually play through two (8 ohm) 4x10's , but I'm thinking of trying just one 4 Ohm cabinet because I'm getting tired of hauling 2 cabinets around. I may consider going with two 2x10's thou. Otherwise if I go for one cabinet it may be a 2x12 , 3x10 , 4x10 , 6x10 , or 8x10. I'm just not a fan of 15' or bigger speakers. I know that a 6x10 or 8x10 would be heavy cabinets , but I'd rather haul one of those than two 4x10's.
Thanks for your input!!

I use a Accugroove "El whappo" and LOVE it....I even have another I selling if interested. Even though it does have a 15,12,6,horn in it.
The tone is just what you send it and you hear every definition of sounds and notes.

Hi 39-Bassist. Thanks for the info and offer. I'll definitely have to look into that cabinet. That is one I've never considered before (or heard of - I'm a little out of touch in the Northwoods of Wisconsin). I need to sell my 6 string Skjold before I can make a purchase.

I haven't used nearly as many cabs as some here have, but my current favorite is my home-built fEarful 12/6 (Alpha). One or two 15/6 or 12/6 cabs might suit you.

I like 8X10, for the time being it is still THE cabinet that says I am BASS! IMHO. Cheers.

Hey wcriley. I've heard of fEarful cabinets , but know nothing about them. Do you have to make them yourself?? What do the 12/6 , 15/6 stand for?? Could you be a bud and post a photo of your cab??
Thanks.

cabs. . .

You may want some better ones, but the Carvin BRX2.10 and 4.10 are good for the money, as is the Avatar cabinets, they give you your choice of 8 or 4 ohms too so you can get full power out of your amp, hey I'm in Door County!!! Rock on!

Genz Benz Uber 410

If you like mid punch then the Genz Benz Uber 410 is a great cab to consider.
The lows are deep, the highs are just right without being harsh and the mids will tear your heart out!!
The 4ohm cab will handle 1000watts with ease!! For a single cab solution the Uber 410 is a great cab!

Watch the video on how they construct this cab. Great stuff!

I am currently running an SLM MIA Ampeg 8X10E + matching 2X15E ... If I ever get the chance to buy a used MESA RR powerhouse 810 or a Diesel 2X15 believe me I am going to be all over them! Or Bag End.

You are going to get all kinds of opinions on these two threads of yours. A lot of what is actually going to matter is what your tonal and or weight goals are. What kind of tone are you going for? hi-fi to my ear is kind of what my G-K 1001RBII is, I like it okay but to those that say is it warm are crazy ... I find it sterile and cold compared to my MESA all tube head, however, I turn the presence and contour controls off and play through a VT bass pedal, and it does the job as far as sound goes and never needs to replace any tubes.

Lots of people love fEarful speaker designs. I hope you eventually find what you are looking for. Cheers.

No pics of mine, but plenty of other people have them in the fEarful threads and wiki.

Yes, they're DIY, but LDS or any half decent woodworker can build them for you. Don't be afraid of building them yourself. I am NOT a skilled finish carpenter and don't own a table saw, but I managed.

The 12/6, 15/6, 15/6/1, etc. designations refer to the driver sizes. For instance "12/6/1" means a 12" woofer, 6.5" mid, and 1" tweeter.

This with a G-B streamliner 900 head is going to be devastating. Cheers.

Hi Joeykun. The Uber 4x10 is actually a cab that I am considering. Like kosmic wizard mentioned I was toying with the idea of matching it with Genz Benz's new Streamliner head when it comes out. I just wanted to hear what some TB'ers thought about some other heads and cabinets before I sell / trade my gear in for a new rig. Thanks for your input!

My favs are my own. Two 210/6 homemade cabs using BP102's and modeled somewhat like a cross between a fEarful (if one used tens) and an Acme Low B-2.

A single 210/6 is all I need for most shows, although larger rooms or outdoors I use two cabs.

Perhaps two Acme Low B-2's stacked vertically is all you'd need. I'd rather haul two 210's than a single 410 and vertically stacked 210 cabs would sound clearer throughout the frequency range than a 410.

Eden cabinets are very impressive imho. They have amazing low end. I have the 210XLT which also has a lot of low mid character to it. I've heard that the 210XST is the same type thing without the low mid tonality.

Edens were in my running for consideration. I used to own an Eden 4x10 (XLT??) about 18 years ago or so and loved it. Anyone know much about the Eden heads?? I'm getting a lot of response on my favorite cab thread , but not so much on the favorite head thread.
Thanks again for all of the great input!

Currently I am using a Thunderfunk TFB750 through a pair of Aguilar GS112's. But that's not the main focus of my reply.

I love the portability and flexibility of the smaller cabs. I am playing with a loud band, and this setup cuts through with no problem and I can dial in exactly the tone that I want within the environment we are playing in.

Before, I was all tube and huge cabs. Not anymore, being much older, the (relatively) light weight and portability makes me a happy bass player!

Oh, and I love the GS112's!

I used to run with an Eden WT500 head and it was a great little amphead. There were a lot of knobs to fiddle with although it sounded awesome flat (flat relative to it's own design). Best part of what little knob tweaking I did was that it was very sensitive to adjustments.

From what I recall it had a rather warm, smooth tone.

Popular consensus seems to be that Eden heads have gone down hill in quality as they are now made overseas. Eden was great stuff in the 90's, but again things have moved forward and left them behind. I have heard nice Eden rigs, but they weren't warm enough in my mind. Even though Eden is no longer the fotm, there are still those that totally swear by the older stuff, and it can be picked up for fairly cheap right now due to other cool heads/cabs entering the market. Cheers.

Hi dmrogers. I was kinda curious about Aggie cabinets , but I have never heard one before and no one sells them in my area where I could try one out. I'm also curious about Bergantinos , but again - never heard one and no dealers in my area. Another cab I'm curious about are Bag Ends , but not to sound like a broken record - never heard one / no dealers in my area. I'm done with taking a chance on gear that I can't try out first - been burnt and unhappy too many times doing that. I will travel a long way to try something out thou - not much choice when you live in the stix like I do.
