What's your favorite speaker configuration?

Sign in to disble this ad
With price and everything else aside what would be your dream speaker configuration? ex: 4x10", 1x12" 6x15" etc... To start, I'm a big fan of 2x12"s these days. Have at it!

I like my 15 with midrange - I ususally turn the tweeters off.

2x 210's stacked vertically. Best by far IMHO.

If I'd need more I'd go 2x 410's.

4x6 or 1X12

I find every 2X12 I've tried too boomy in general, within the same brand the 1X12 always seems to have a more focused sound with better pitch definition than the 2X12. Due to the different internal volume, the tuning is different & they sound much different to me than if you would stack two 1X12's. I'd take a 1X12 stack over the 2X12 any day. Not for it being more modular, I'd find the tone to be more my preference.

My 4x6 seems to have the most balanced & most hi-fi, yet deepest sound I've found to date. It has kind of an oxymoronic thing going on where it sounds both quick & deep at the same time. But there's something about the focused sound of a single speaker that I miss at times. Virtually no phase cancellation with a single driver & they seem to "launch" those pillowy, burpy low mids out into the room real nicely. Also, 1X12's seem to really punch through the mix a little better than my 4X6, they don't sound as good by themselves as they do in a band though.

Most 1X10's don't have enough oompfh to use as a single cab, and most 1X15 sound too flabby too me, Markbass 1X15's sound a little better than some other brands I've tried but still flabby & not quick enough attack for my playing style.

So that's why I think 1X12 is kind of the sweet spot for a single cab. They have the most focused sound while still retaining enough bottom end to use standalone.

4X10's aren't an option for me, they're overkill for the venues I play, too big to fit in my car & I find the tone a little scooped nowadays. I'd rather scoop the tone with my EQ when desired than have the cab that way by default. I consider 4X10's to be a more of the "house rig", something loaned from the venue or previous band, stays put at the joint and you just plug into when you get there rather than to bother with shlepping/owning one.

Two NY604 stacked is about ideal for me and even that's the largest rig I've ever had, I can't imagine a situation that would ever need any more than that. If that's not enough too keep up, it means the rest of the band is too loud.

Love the vertical 212 x 210. Never a problem being heard.

I use a 12/6 for 95% of my gigs and a 12/6-12/sub for the other 5%. Although in the past I have used 1X15, 2X15,
4X10, 8X10 & a 2X18/2X10 and have always gotten good sounds out of each. Each can sound great and each can sound like cr#p. Depends on how and what is pushing them. My current set-up is based largely on getting older, (maybe wiser) and lazy. If I had roadies and a huge budget I could see using any of the above with the exception of the 18's.

Now after the ramble I like the fEarfuls or the fridge.
