What's Your Opinion Of This Amp?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I'm a fairly new bass player (been playing for around 5 months), and I've recently joined a band. I looked in a store today for a good bass amp for playing live, and I came across a Stagg Bass Amp.

The details of it are:

500 Watt Amp
1 x 15 combo
DI out

It was originally £500, but been reduced to £240 on a sale.

Since I don't know much about bass amps at all, I was wondering if anyone could let me know if it sounds like a good deal, and if it's worth getting.

Thanks for your time.

No, I don't think that's a good choice. What you want is 300 or so watts, more is always better, but the KEY to a good rig for playing in a rock band is speakers. A 4x10, or 2x12 should be the minimum. Single speaker cabs are fine for low volume, but anything else requires more speakers.

Thanks for the reply.

I've been doing some research myself and I agree with what you've said.

Have you got any suggestions as to any bass amps that'd be good for me to get(for a reasonable price)?

Thanks for the advice tdub0199, I'm gonna steer clear of Stagg.

Thanks for the advice as well, username1. I've looked at the heads you mentioned and they seem pretty awesome, but since I'm a beginner, I've heard it'd be easier to get a bass combo amp. Do you think that's correct? And do you know of any good bass combo amps?

There are different reasons to choose between combo and head/cabinets amps. None of them have anything to do with being a beginner.

Combos are usually less expensive and don't require a lot of knowledge since almost everything was set in order for you to plug and play.
With a head and cabinets, you have more flexibility. You can choose between different offerings of head/cabinets and speaker combinations, but you need a little bit of knowledge on how to connect cabs to the amp and a basic understanding of the ohms Law and hjow different speaker enclosures interact/complemet each other.

If you're in England try to find a use Trace Elliot combo, they are usually cheap and give a lot of bang for your buck.
Laney, Peavey and Ashdown are other brands easily found in England and don't cost a fortune.

Thanks Hellbastard, what you're saying makes sense.

I think I'm gonna go for a head/cabinet amp. Hopefully I can find some for a reasonable price.

I'll also check out the combos you mentioned to see if they're worth it, but I reckon head/cabinet amps are the best.

Thanks once again!
