When did amp manufacturers start manufacturing their amps with Speakon jacks?

IIRC, sometime in the mid '90s.

Not very well. The shortcomings of 1/4" for speakers, including short-circuiting amp outputs, are well documented.

The 1/4" cable was was developed for use in the original telephone patch bays. It was never designed to handle high powered amplification and has been way too slow in going away in our industry. If you really want to know how bad 1/4" cables really are, try taking a jack, inserting a 1/4" cable into and just look at the amount of surface are contact that occurs between the cable and the jack. Definitely not good for a 1000watt bass amplifier! The speakON is a far superior cable.

I didn't used to care. And then I fried my cab's 1/4 in. inputs. (Plugged cab in while amp was on - my bad.) The speakon still worked. Good on Avatar for including both.
