Who still makes 1U preamps?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm currently running a BBE Bmax in my rack. I like it a lot, but I've been interested recently in trying some others. Unfortunately, it looks like some of the most popular preamps (the one's I'm interested in anyway) are out of production and very hard to find (Aguilar db659; SWR grand prix / IOD; Trace v-type). It also doesn't look like any of these manufacturers even make 1U preamps anymore. What gives?

The BBE MaxT comes to mind, if you don't mind a BBE lateral move. I bought one, but haven't got the rig together yet- it'll be for the Impaler I get from Vlad.

It features a 1u form factor, 12AX7 tube, compressor, the BBE Sonic Maximizer with which you're already familiar, and a Jensen DI which all make for a nice set of standard features. I guess I sound like a MaxT shill, but I bought this pre based on this feature set.

If you want to up the ante in the 1u size, you can go Demeter. They offer two different bass preamps, both in a 1u configuration. You can't really go wrong with a Demeter, as they're essentially HiWatt DR201 preamps. You'll pay twice as much for a Demeter over a BBE MaxT, but Demeters are made using much higher tolerance electrical components. So there're three 1u offerings... (forget the nomenclature of the two Demeter pre's).

Tech 21 has 2, Eden has a 2 space. That may be it outside of Demeter and Alembic??!!!

It's a trendy thing obviously, with pedals kinda taking up some of the slack. They all musta decided with the advent of class D mini amps, preamps wouldn't be a big enough seller. OR, the fact that bass mini amps seemed to appear faster than commercial sound class D power.

You can always go used, which is what I do. Then you can find all those preamps you mention, plus a few like the Ashly SC-40, the Yamaha PB-1, many different Peavey pre's, etc. It's a gamble for sure, but, if you buy here on TB, it's usually a no brainer as far as the truth goes describing any issues. You can trust everybody here. Ebay, you're taking a chance, but, if you ask the right questions, and pay with PayPal, you should be okay. I recently won an Ashly SC-40 preamp on Ebay, that is in really great shape, other than a few scratchy pots and the usual rack wear scratches. Built like a tank, and a very nice, warm tone if you want it, with nice eq points. I also found the predecessor to the BBE max pre's, the BBE 383, for cheap on Ebay, which is one of my all time favorite bass preamps. Worth taking a chance, imho, to go the used route. If not, you may want to try some of the channel strips with eq, one rack pre's made by companies like Presonus.

I'm really digging it. Nothing outlandish, just nice, solid bass tones with some ooomph. Really a great pre.

I will definitely be keeping my eyes on the used gear market. I just think it's a shame that half of the preamps evaluated at basstasters are no longer in production, and are nearly impossible to find. Of course that site appears to have been defunct since 2007.

I'm not in a rush, and there were some very good suggestions here, so thanks, I'll be looking out.

Ashly made a couple of cool channel strips in 1RU format, the DPX-100 and DPX-200. The compressor section is killer in those too.

The Ashly BP-41 is another classic oldie. Different feature set than the SC-40, with a pretty useful EFX loop and biamping capability.
