Why do those of us who are NOT tube lovers not love tubes?

Sign in to disble this ad
Sorry JimmyM...had to do it

I am sure they all look nice and chunky but...

- they are heavy
- they are a pain to move to a gig...a greater pain to move to crappy gigs
- when a tube breaks, you don't feel technically proficient to do it yourself, so you have to move the chunky beast to repair.
- warm up...cool down. I just want to plug and play...like right now.
- Attempt to catch a falling amp and you might injure your shoulder

For those of you that would never understand a Woody Allen or an Almodovar movie

The title is a parody to this thread:
Why do we tube lovers love tubes?

Might want to re-think your title, there, buddy.

So much has been written in this forum in praise and otherwise about tube amps, so I won't comment directly. Instead, I'm reminded of a quote I heard a long time ago about tattoos:

"the difference between tattoed people and non-tattooed people is that tattoed people don't care if you have tattoos or not".

dig?

These reasons are all.. well not good ones. You can't fix your own solid state / class d head. There are a bunch of heavy, dare I say chunky SS heads. If you can afford the added initial cost, and don't mind the size, the only reason not to go tube is if you like a modern hi fi tone, imo.

The broken English of the title alone speaks for itself!

Only reason for me is that my girl can carry my LMII and I don't like carrying my SVT.
PS - Tube amps look cooler too but not cool enough for my lazy a$$ to carry to some bar for a bunch of drunks

Funny, we all talk about SS amps that sound like tubes, but rarely hear talk about any amps that sound like SS

Because we don't need to remember the conversion to tube watts.

My only hangup is the weight.

Me playing a solid state head has nothing to do with the fact that I like solid state better. It has to do with convenience, reliability, and value. I pay $700 for a new LMIII that will likely be problem-free and require no maintenance for many years to come. It's small, so it makes my load in/out much easier. Also, I have a "do-it-all" amplifier that I can play small coffee shop gigs, big band concerts, jazz gigs, and full-on rock shows with...I just have to select the right cabinet for the situation between my MB Traveler 2x10, Eden 1x15, or my Aguilar GS410.

Down the road I will own an all-tube amp again, but as a college music student just breaking even financially, I can't afford to have my gear break down.

I have a close friend who is a tube junky. He probably has 15-20 tube amps along with enough spare parts to build that many more. He's awesome with them. He tweaks and fixes and mods all sorts of guys' stuff.

He actually thinks I have a some kind of physical and/or psychological disorder because I don't care for them. I think he feels sorry for me.

Weight, well my 410 is impossible to lift on my own, whether or not I have the SVT or a SS with me.
