Why does my horn crackle?

Sign in to disble this ad
The horn on my Acoustic B115 has been crackling on me. It doesn't do it when I'm playing normally, but on occasion it decides that it wants to. When I run an active bass through it and I turn up the lows, it will do it on occasion. When I run my synth sounds from my laptop through it it does it, even when I run it through the active input of the head. And, most recently, whenever I use my new Behringer Bass V-amp, it decides to do it.

Am I over driving the horn or something? When I turn it off in all of these cases, the mystery crackle goes away. When I back down the gain it also goes, but at that point the output of the V-amp is lower than the volume of the head if I were to bypass the unit.

I know it's not the V-amp doing it, this has been a problem even before I received it, so let's not turn this into a Behringer bashing thread.

party pooper.

sounds to me like you're overpowering it. maybe you have too much gain coming from your v-amp or synth. is your v-amp's output louder than your bass would be if you had no effects? do you use distortion? distortion and synth sounds can be bad for tweeters and can cause that. the fact that it does it only when you turn something up is what makes me think that you're definitely trying to ask too much out of it. try turning the tweeter down. and try turning down in general. just because the knobs go to 10 doesn't mean that the cab will let you do it.

The "horn" is surely a Peizo; not real driver. They can be had for $3.00. Not the best way of doing things, really. The Peizo, undoubtedly, gets your full signal, as there is no crossover.

I'd love to turn down the horn, but it's either on or off. I've only got to twiddle with the thing for about 30 minutes so maybe It'll get worked out as I even out the levels on everything.

I suppose I could just learn to live with the horn turned off.

Sorry to poop on the party Jimmy.
