Why the hell are the older heavier amps the same price as the neos?

SWR golight 800W 4X10 Bass Speaker Cabinet: Shop Bass & Other Musical Instruments | Musician's Friend

$899

SWR Goliath IV 4X10 Bass Speaker Cabinet: Shop Bass & Other Musical Instruments | Musician's Friend

$899 and 30 lbs heavier

Why? Why do they even make the old ones? Who would buy one if it's the exact same price?

Some people prefer the traditional speaker design, its not about weight to everyone.
And from the rumours i have heard going around these forums Neo cabs probably wont be made much longer by a lot of companies.

The golight cab uses neodymium magnets which cost a lot more then the traditional magnets used in the goliath. The weight savings is in the speakers not the cab.

your talking as if somthing heavyer should be more expencive. take supercars. you often pay more to get less and for it to be lighter

I certainly like the 'trad' sound of the ceramic drivers better. I've only gone for neo drivers for 2 reasons. 1stly-coz I'm lazy :-) grabbed a 1x12 neo. Then a 2x12. But my fave cabs are the Berg NV215 & Mesa Scout 12-oops, which is neo. Tho ain't that light, no doubt due to Mesa's ample cab bracing.
& 2- A bad back has forced me to offload my other fave cabs. Just couldn't lift them-even the small lift onto a stage, or into the car :-(
The neo loaded cabs are good, but certainly different. IMO.
As to why the same price.... Because they can maybe?? That's be the reason here in my local stores anyway.

The simple answer is that consumers are still buying "old and heavy" gear. Until people don't buy primitive heavy music gear, the price will be whatever the market will bear.

An SVT-VR is 14 times the weight of a Genz Benz STM600 and the heavier amp costs 2.5 times as much. Ampeg is still making money selling their behemoth, and GB is doing just fine with their featherweight.

Plus, "old and heavy" drivers sound different. Some people will prefer the sound of the old technology.

As others have said, not everyone cares about weight.

And some people like the older models better.

Cost and availability of neodymium. Availability has plummeted, therefore, cost has skyrocketed. This is due to a change in policy in the Chinese government.

People might think like me.

When I lift a piece of music gear and it's heavy, I think "this is heavy, must be some quality components in there" It might not be true, but my mind thinks like that.

It's like micro heads, they may be under 2kg and small enough to fit in your guitar case, but I see them as flimsy and "fake" compared to a big, beefy rackmount product.

There's not much logic in my thinking, but I'm sticking with it.

...because a lot of people believe that tone is magically tied to weight. Its heavy, therefore it MUST sound good.

Right?

I don't find I have any better tone at 225lbs than I do at 185lbs.

I keep telling my girlfriend that I've been carrying out a prolonged experiment...

Hahhahahaha
Back in the '60s I was a 6'2" bass waif.
The fur collar I wore around my neck fit easily around my waist.
My mini rig of doom was; an SVT square back with Marshall Major Head, a V4B cab with a Sunn 2000s head, and a Leslie (wood) 147. "Heavy" was a term in common usage in those days.
I'm staying at 196lbs.
But hey tone is in the fingers any way, right?

Depending upon the night, I feel like I've got heavy fingers when I play.

I've been down as low as 145 dependingly...but I've given up on the notion that you need heavy gear to sound good.
