WILL MY CAB BE UNDER POWERED?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am looking to upgrade my current two cabs (Ampeg b410hlf + b115e) to a SVT610. Would my Ampeg B500dr head, which is 300w at 4ohms, be able to power the 610 sufficiently until I had purchased a more suitable head?

Any help would be really appreciated, Thanks

yes, you can't underpower a cab--just don't push the amp past it's limits into clipping, you'll hear this if you did, it doesn't sound good

I use the SVT4-Pro on my 610 HLF. Both are SLM issue though - so the spreakers can take a hammering.

The problem with underpowering a cab is as Smoke stated above - you are too tempted to push the head and send a clipped signal. That clipping blows speakers far faster than gobs of clean power. I have had my 4-Pro cooking with the 31 HZ slider all the way up and the bass knob at 3:00. That is a lot of juice at the lower frequency and I could feel air from the ports hitting my feet! By checking the in and out clip meeters I know I have had that 1400 watt head near max. Sounded great though!

I have heard less luck with the imported speakers though.

So, for now keep it clean - for later get more power.

Would I be running the head at almost its full volume to get a decent volume through the cab? And that would cause the clipping?

Thanks

FALSE. Please do some research here on TB.

And to the OP, speaker cabs don't need any minimum amount of wattage to work--the wattage rating on them is just an indication of the maximum wattage they can take for an extended period without burning up.

Absolutely! In fact if you are not running a full-blast signal through you cab right now it is probably toast. Whatever you do, under no circumstance EVER stop playing through your cab or the voice coils will turn to dust. If you think square waves are bad they are a picnic compared to NO waves!
