It won't let me rock!!!

Sign in to disble this ad
I just bought an Ampeg SVT-450H and when I play it the fan never comes on! It gets very warm in the back where the cooling vents are, and a few nights ago when I played it the amp cut out--after only about 30 min. of playing! I played another guy's 450 at a concert (all three bands used his rig) and it NEVER cut out!!! What is the problem? Does it have to do with the outlet, speaker cable, instrument cable, defective part, or the EQ? The following were my settings when it cut out:

Gain: 6.5
Bass: 6.5
Ultra Mid: 3.5
Treble: 0
Master: 5
Limiter: Off
Graphic EQ: Off

My rig is the SVT-450H plugged a Peavey 3620 400W cab. I use a small speaker cable plugged into a normal speaker output on the back of the 450 and plug into the full range output of the cab.

I love how this thing sounds! Please tell me what the problem is!!

Thanks!!

New? Used?

If it's new, take it back and get it either 1) serviced or 2) replaced under warranty - if SVT will actually do that without a lot of hassle and shipping and waiting, etc.

If it's used - well I have opinions of used gear - but you need to get it fixed.

The fan has to work - it's not an option.

Are all your speakers working, I think the old 3620's were 400 watts at 4ohms, if the speakers are working and they are all original you shouldn't have a problem with the cab and would need to look at the amp as the problem. Ofcourse if someone has replaced any of the speakers and they are not right for that cab you could be running at a lower impedance which could put the amp in a protect mode if it has one.

As far as the fan goes, it should come on when it gets hot, try putting a house fan behind it to keep air moving and see if it shuts down then.

When my Ampeg B3158 burned up on me the fan never came on either. So I kept a fan behind it after it was repaired to keep it cool, the fan still never came on.

I got it off Ebay from a music store's account...it's supposed to be new out of the box...so I guess you could say it's used, but not really

B-stock? A return? Scratch-n-dent?

I wonder how things like this happen - QC for such a big company should confirm that the fan works at the last stop on the assembly line anyway - right?

fan problems are simple to diagnose. usually the connector just gets disconnected. open it up and make sure it's plugged in. if it is, then it is probably broken and needs replaced. just make sure you get one with the same specs. ampeg might be able to hook you up...call or email their cs dept.

Yeah the speakers are working great! So did you have any trouble with the amp after it was repaired and you just used the house fan? And doesn't it eventually fry the amp if you keep playing it and cause it to cut out?

If it keeps cutting out...yeah it will wear it out, cuz somethings wrong and it wont fix itself. But with mine, after I put a house fan behind it I could play it all night and it would get warm but wouldn't cut out.
