Is it worth it to buy an extension cab for a Peavey TNT 115 combo? *UPDATED w/ pic*

Sign in to disble this ad
By itself, I don't think my combo amp is loud enough, so I want to get an extension cab. However, from what I have been reading, it looks like it will only add about 50 watts. So why is it worth it to buy an extension cab? What I am considering is buying a cab and connecting it to my Peavey TNT 115 combo. If it still isn't to my liking I am going to sell the Peavey combo and buy a head for the cab. I am going to buy a cab today. Thanks.

What kind of gigs are you playing? Also, what's your EQ setup like? I've got a Peavey TNT myself, and the only times I could imagine having issues is playing outside without a PA.

More speakers equal more volume. 20 watts through 215s will sound louder then 20 watts through a single 15

Don't know what speaker yours has, but the 90's model w/ a sheffield 15 that I had would fart out before the amp ran out of juice. So that, pluss the extra sensitivity of an extra speaker = it will get a bunch louder with an extension cab.

Thanks for the replies. I don't gig. I just play for fun in my bedroom (not that people who do gig don't have fun!).

Extension cab good. Go for a 215 of the right impedance and prepare to be amazed.

EDIT: I see you are a bedroom player. So a 115 of correct impedance would be a better choice.

the ext cab will probley do the trick,50 watts dont sound like much but when the ohm load drops the tone changes and gets good and loud.i had i peavey combo 1-15 and with another 15 it was enough to hang with 2 guitarist using mesa rigs!

OK, it's time for stupid question #1:

How does an extension cab connect into a TNT?

My older TNT130 has two Output sections - Crossover and Patch
I thought that the Crossover was just for Bi-amping (which I interpret to mean connecting another combo or an amp/speaker).

Sorry to derail, but it's a question that I've been trying to answer for quite some time.
Thanks.

I must be on the TB rant today.

We're discussing if it's a good idea... there are at least 4 generations of the same amp.. they have different features.

Your replies are going to be misleading.

Not loud enough for your bedroom? Take it back.

In any case, the advice from post #6 applies. Just RTM on extension speaker impedance and buy accordingly. A lot of used 115 Carvin or Peavey cabs would fit the bill.

I got a good deal for an Ampeg SVT15E! Now I am ecstatic about my set-up. I want to stack them, but the Peavey is too heavy. Thanks for the help TB!

Cool, man! But you better practice your dead lifts, because it's gonna sound even better that way. Gotta say I like the cosmetic approach Peavey's taken on this generation of TNT.

Ah, there was that time when the chicken wire got ripped down and the beer bottles would hit ya right in the face. Yeah, that wasn't fun at all. After that the band decided it would be GLAD to play both BORN TO BE WILD AND FREEBIRD.

It's worth it. It will be way louder with an extension. You will be tapping into an extra 100 watts out of the amp and you will have more cone area working for you.

Make sure your extension is 8 ohms.
