Any pre will work with an IPR. They have less than a volt input sensitivity.

Yep. I bet even a lot of pedals would have enough juice to run one of these.

I'm in the process of putting together a lightweight rig with a Peavey IPR 1600. It's bridged on the input and output into two Avatar cabs (410 and 212). They are NEO cabinets and they sound very "open". With all of the below options, I can get a muddy sound, a clean flat sound, and heavey lows mids for slapping. I've tried both active and passive basses including Bartolini(conklin, jazz), Basslines(jazz24), Villex(prat), Yamaha (trb5p w/piezo).

I've been trying different combinations. These are the preamps I've been trying:

The Fender TBP-1 is a killer preamp! Very tubey. Also the best pre for distortion.

The Trace V-Type preamp is a different sound, but still very nice. Not quite as tubey as the Fender, but it does capture the "Trace" sound. I like it more than the Alembic F-1x.

The SansAmp BDDI has a great tone and I like it too. I'd characterize the sound as crunchy.
The Bassbone DI sounds good, accurate, and very solid state sounding. If you want clean, it's the way to go.
The Eden WTDI does indeed sound like Eden, but with more tone control.

Putting the Eden in front of the Trace sounds awesome!!!!

The benchmark for the sound I'm trying to get is a Trace Hexavalve.

I'm still muddling through all the combinations and will post more on this later.

p.s. My two local friends that have heard the Avatars are selling all their cabs and going with the Avatar 410's and 212's.

I'm hoping to use my LMII as a pre for the IPR3K...Theoretically it looks like it should work. That way for lighter gigs I'll use it as a head, and for more serious gigs (or just ones where I want overkill) I'll have the LMII/IPR combination running.

I had a Alembic F1X. I got a Peavey Max for backup, always kept in my vehicle for just in case. But after ABing them the Peavey could do all the F1X stuff with its similarly set-up and voiced tube side, but the F1X could not do the Peavey sounds from the SS side.

Yep, the Peavey has channel switching, and blending, and more EQ - which really opens up a lot more tones - and the tube side alone does all that the F1X did. So I finally sold the F1X. There was a few hundred dollars difference too : }
