Would using a baritone guitar with a bass amp mess it up?

I could be getting a baritone guitar soon and was wondering will I need to get a new guitar amp or still be able to play it out of my CB-30 without messing it up.

30 watts w/a coax 10 inch speaker I'd imagine it'd be just fine. Simply a matter if you like the sound of that better than running it through a guitar amp. For my bari I prefer guitar 2-12s but that's just me.

I play my guitars through bass amps often. Works fine but not as bright sounding.

I think the problem is only with going below what the speakers can handle... like bass through a guitar amp, but not the other way around. The other possible issue is speaker excursion. Think about it: Bass notes are often accented a whole lot more than guitar notes so again, too light a speaker might have issues but not the other way around. All you would have is high end roll off in the former example and lack of nuance for the latter one.

Ask the people with Bass VIs, those are baritone guitars.

I beg to differ...

If I am not mistaken:

Baritone Guitar=1 octave below guitar
Bass VI=2 octaves below guitar (tuned all 4ths of course)

Not the same range.

Nope. A bass is only one octave below guitar, and the Bass VI is, too. A baritone guitar is tuned down a 4th or 5th below guitar, starting with a B or A for the bottom string.

thank you

this is why I prefer something along the lines of 2-12s with some wattage like a Twin Reverb or Marshall 4-12 for bari's as well as my cello. Those can handle the lows of the bari but still give you the clarity and articulation of a guitar amp.

The OP's amp sounds like it should do pretty well for smaller gigs and practice settings based on that range, but he will have to play it for himself to see if it works for him. Just my 0.02.......

I agree...a guitar amp with some power behind it is probably your best bet for bari guitar, since it's not usually intended to be a bass. The 6 string basses like the Bass VI also work better in guitar amps, unless of course you're looking for it to actually play bass on.

it's pretty much the same as a 7-string guitar pnly without the extra high string. Many guitarists use these with normal guitar amps all the time and they sound great (for guitars that is...) you can play it through your bass amp but expect it to sound very clean and bright in the top end - acoustic guitars generally sound better through bass cabs than electrics IMO
