GK 410MBE is sealed and ~ 41 lbs (at least the Chinese version, not sure about the new US version). They are a little boomy, but if you stuff them with ~ 2 lbs of Acousta stuff they sound great.

One of the lightest 10's I can find weighs 3.5 pounds, so 14 for 4 of them. How do you propose to build a properly supported cab around them that only weighs 11 pounds? If you could, why would anyone pay for the technology for the composite material to build such a cab, when it uses a poor design like a 410?

I like the Fearful designs...but I disagree with the 410 being a poor design. I think that discussion if valid one if You disagree, but respectfully I would ask that be on another thread.

Just to clarify (4) 10s would be for a 25lb cabinet. (Hypothetically :hiding:)

That's one hell of a hypothesis!

You are looking at around 14 pounds for the four drivers. How are you going to build a properly braced cabinet for them with the remaining 11 pounds? And why would anyone pay for that premium material for the design/performance aspect of a 410?

iriegnome 10-05-2012 09:44 AM

My 2x12 sits in at 48 pounds and my single 12 is at 26 pounds and I think they are light! If you could pound out high quality tone, great wattage capability and a good price, I would check them out..

I'm not the builder so from a technically standpoint I cannot answer.

Why do people people pay $1125 for a non-neo 410?
Answer: Because they want them. Plain and simple.

Baird6869 10-05-2012 09:51 AM

Of course, but when I look at my lightweight Berg AE210's, I cant imagine how to cut the weight by more than 1/2. They already have NEO speakers, thin wood, etc.

I really don't think it is possible.

Right away 3-5lbs per speaker kills the dream.

Are you sure of that ;)

Edit: I don't want to sound facetious in any way. All I'm saying is don't get stuck on what you think
some components way.

I come in peace :)

So even 2 3lb speakers would leave 10lbs for wood, crossover, hardware, tolex, grille, etc.

Pretty sure it currently can't be done in a way that would sound great.

My boss asks me every month when I roll up forecast #'s "would you bet your career on this?"

In this case, I wouldn't!

jlepre 10-05-2012 10:31 AM

Using alternate material to wood (Fiberglass?) and alternate bracing, you might be able to accomplish this. It would be VERY expensive.

basswave 10-05-2012 11:19 AM

Alternate material

Hi John
Yep your correct.
Not sure on the expensive part (seriously).

Mehve 10-05-2012 11:22 AM

Even the composite crazy88 cabs weigh in at a little over 20lbs, iirc.

Thats with 8" drivers of known weight too.

I am very curious to find out what type of material would allow this type of weight claim. Could be revolutionary if such a material exists that can be had at reasonable prices.

wcriley 10-05-2012 11:43 AM

Not intending to poke any fun at the OP, but...

This Criley-Core prototype weighed less than 2 lbs. :D

will33 10-05-2012 11:54 AM

Got a line on some affordable carbon fiber?...perhaps fused with helium?

How about some of that nano-tech stuff they are using to build the space elevator?
