Would you swap ypur wagon for a sedan you're drooling over if it meant a smaller rig?

Just curious. I'm trading my wagon and eyeing a droolworthy sedan 'cause I cannot find the wagon I want at the price I want BUT it'd mean dumping my M9 and LDS 15-6 wunder rig and using my Scout cabs and Walkabout head, which I also love......but does not wump as low or clean. Keep in mind I gig about 8 times a year as a hobbyist. Obviously, if I was out every weekend the priorities would differ.

You might be surprised at what you stuff in a sedan.

I have no trouble putting 2 12's together with all the rest of the typical stuff in a 5 series BMW. I used to shoehorn a pair of TL606 cabinets and a Bassman head into that car.

I suggest you schlep your big rig to the dealer and see if it fits.

Jim

We discussed this same quandary a bit a few weeks back...

http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f34/doomed-crappy-cars-692828-post9684401/

As long as I like big rigs, will I always have to opt for the wagon or the hatchback...

Many of the best sedans have rear seats that fold down anyway.

My Grand Am sedan fit my rig almost as neatly as my Magnum does now. Mostly I use the "extra" room in the Magnum to carry PA stuff and drum stuff to use fewer cars getting to gigs.

For what it's worth, I'd definitely trade the Magnum (in a heartbeat) for a new Pontiac G8GT or Charger R/T. Love my Mag, but for one of those? Yeah, I'd find a way to fit it.

I'm sure I could borrow a truck 8 times a year.

No. Firstly, because my drummer has a sedan, and I need to transport his drum kit too (which I don't mind).

Secondly, having a house and kids, I need it for more than hauling my rig around.

All I'd have to do is swap vehicles with the wife, but since my gigs are in NY and she's often at our place in Montreal that requires planning Plus when she trades hers I don't wanna hafta urge her to keep it large because of my hobby. Not fair. In any event, the drummer has a truck.

I've actually considered trading my car for a SUV or something so I could move my current rig around easier...

I get my rig, 1 or 2 basses and PA - into a Subaru Outback wagon. I also stuff 4 people and gear for trips up to Mt Hood. 3 people and bicycle accoutrment. 2 people and 2 large dogs for trips to hike or the coast to hang on the beach... Sedans suck for most everything I want to do...

You live up where it's cold, icy, mountainous... 4 wheel is more or less mandatory for me. Can't afford a BMW/Benz, etc ... The Subbie is uber-practical and reliable as the come (this is me knocking on wood ...)

Dude, keep that 15/6.

Mine fits in the front seat of my 97 honda civic 4 door. Everything else goes in the trunk.

Never. There ain't no car that's "drool worthy" to me except for maybe a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. Cars (well, minivans since about 1995) are simply a way to get where I need to go and carry all the stuff I need to haul with me.

I gave this a lot of thought when I bought my current car. The Acura RSX-S has a deceptively large cargo area: not quite big enough for an 810, but anything smaller is totally doable. Easily carries: 410,2-3 basses, amp rack case, effects case, luggage, and a passenger no problem. Way more room than a Mini, not quite as much room as the 4 door hatch/wagons (subbie, vw)

2.0L 200hp NA engine
2 Door
30mpg
weighs < 3000 lbs
Lots of cargo
Lots of fun (when there's no cargo)

I thought it was a great compromise (except most people think its a girly car )

edit: I think you can get away with larger gear than you might think with smaller cars. I squeezed a 4x15 in the back of a 92 honda civic 4 door sedan once! It was tight, but it fit!
edit2: thats what she said

I know-I can already feel seller's remorse at the THOUGHT of parting with it, LOL.

I'm still working on finding a wagon with the awd I require but it's a 2010 I need to find to get the deal I want and there aren't too many around.

Nope, not a chance.. To me, vehicles are strictly utility. It needs to haul me and whatever I need to carry from point A to point B. To that end my personal vehicle will always be a truck, my Ranger fills every transportation need I have, and at 24mpg to boot... In addition, I live by my "11th commandment" Thou shalt not have a car payment. Careful shopping and a willingness to turn wrenches saves me hundreds of $$ a month..

Vehicles are strictly for getting around and getting things done. If it serves anything else it becomes more of a luxury. I recently purchased a suzuki grand vitara for the sole purpose of loading my powerhouse 1000 more comfortably and for roadtrips to places with dirt roads. That said I had a seat toledo (equivalent to VW jetta) which I could fit 4 by 10s and 15s comfortably in the trunk, and fit a drum set in the backseats... So really it depends on what sedan you're getting...

I guess it's a matter of priorities.

95% of my driving is to haul gear to gigs, so loadability is a big, big deal for me.

Since I play upright, sedans are pretty much out of the question.

I must admit, though: it did cross my mind, going to 2 1x12s if that allowed me drive something that gets 35mpg.

But I can't quite swing a new car AND a new bass rig!

Long-live the station wagon! I REALLY want one of those sleek new Hyundai Elantra Touring station wagon/hatchback cars. Attractive, available with a manual (a MUST for me) and good gas mileage!

However, right now I'm driving my girlfriend's 2001 Camry (auto trans; blah). My GK MB115 fits in the trunk easily, or of course on the back seat. Basses usually ride on the back seat, amp in trunk. Works for now...
