Seems like a dumb question, and this thread no more belongs in amps than it does in basses I suppose.... but this is a REALLY sweet tone..... and the bass line is down right UGLY (in a good way)
Does this sound like flats to you? Ive used a ton of tube amps and tube hybrids and never gotten this kind of overdrive characteristic.... way smooth but cutting....
how would one go about getting this sort of tone? ‪David Matthews - Sandworms‬‏ - YouTube
The groove in this line is so deep you could break your leg!

No idea where the clipping is coming from though but it's nice and smooth and allows for good articulation. Great sound. |

There are 1985 Bob James videos on you tube with King doin' a smokin' solo, then a screaming vocal on 'Lucille' He's playing a Guild Pilot on these - thru a giant Peavey. Again it's all in the hands... |

It is a cool riff, however.

To tell the truth, Im actually looking around for OD pedals right now. I recently strung my 55-02 with flats, and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for an OD pedal that will give that kind of midrangey sort of overdrive. I tried the Boss ODB3, but that seemed to either sound really woofy (that awful sound of 100hz & below that sounds like muffled radio static) or way too "clanky" in the SVT sort of way.
Any suggestions?
