Wow... dig this tone ... (and this Groove!)

Sign in to disble this ad
Seems like a dumb question, and this thread no more belongs in amps than it does in basses I suppose.... but this is a REALLY sweet tone..... and the bass line is down right UGLY (in a good way)

Does this sound like flats to you? Ive used a ton of tube amps and tube hybrids and never gotten this kind of overdrive characteristic.... way smooth but cutting....

how would one go about getting this sort of tone?

‪David Matthews - Sandworms‬‏ - YouTube

The groove in this line is so deep you could break your leg!

Sounds like a MM Stingray bass clipping a nice mic pre. Cool tune!

Definitely flats. Sounds like a Precision with flats clipping a B-15 at a moderate level. Not an especially difficult sound to cop.

Right on. Killer line, killer sound. Playing behind the beat is dirty.

Well mind you I was just guessing. Could be a Ray. Definitely a single pickup bass whatever it is.

Hmmm, just looked it up...Mark Egan, Will Lee, and Gary King played bass on the Dune ST, with Gary King being credited for the melody solo on Sandworms.

A Ray with flats was my first thought too. Reminds me a bit of Bernie Edwards tone.

No idea where the clipping is coming from though but it's nice and smooth and allows for good articulation. Great sound.

I saw Gary King live (a few times) use a blond Guild Starfire in the late 70's. There are 1985 Bob James videos on you tube with King doin' a smokin' solo, then a screaming vocal on 'Lucille' He's playing a Guild Pilot on these - thru a giant Peavey. Again it's all in the hands...

I know but the one that came to mind instantly was Large Pro.

If Jimmy is right about Gary King playing bass on Sandworms, then it is a Pedulla bass with flats.

I don't know why everyone assume this bass is strung with flat... I can get that tone out of any of my fretted basses by turning down tone and doing a bit of muting. No biggie.

It is a cool riff, however.

This sounds more likely.

To tell the truth, Im actually looking around for OD pedals right now. I recently strung my 55-02 with flats, and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for an OD pedal that will give that kind of midrangey sort of overdrive. I tried the Boss ODB3, but that seemed to either sound really woofy (that awful sound of 100hz & below that sounds like muffled radio static) or way too "clanky" in the SVT sort of way.

Any suggestions?

Or the VT Bass set to the B-15 setting and the treble wound down.
