Wow. Staccato + VT Bass

So I stopped into a local music store to kill some time and sa that they had in stock a TC Staccato '51 combo. So I tried it out and was sold on it. Hype be damned, this thing got me everywhere I tried to go.

I scooped it (even more), I mid-focused it, I played deep bass, I rang harmonics through it, I played a Marcus Miller 4, standard J5, Hofner Club Bass (china), and truth be told, they were all great to me with and without the 212 cab extension.

So I left and came back later to try out some pedals (pork loin, 00FUNK, and VTBass) and was blown away bythe VTBass.

I wasn't a fan of the 'tube tone' on the amp but that may have been because I wasn't playing the rig in a gig situation.

But w-o-w - was the VT ever more than I had expected through a decent rig - of which the TC was more than ample

Laying off the TC's 'tube tone', I a-b'd the clean/VT offerings and look forward to the VT being offered as a rack Pre for those that want a preamp/poweramp rig.

I look at the VTBass as more of a preamp than an 'effect' so that's why I posted here.

It's probably going to be my next major purchase aside from materials to make my own cab.

I left the store being entirely satisfied with my experience and glad that the hype about these products didn't leave me disappointed.

I went from going 'yeah right - that's what I'm talking about, TC' to 'oh right, that's why everybody's been talking about that for decades: Ampeg.'

It was the first time in a year that I'v played through a rig that got me everywhere I wanted to go immediately and without compromise.

www.putnamelectronics.com does the character pedal mods, including the rackmount mod.

If you dig the VT pedal, you might want to try it with a more 'neutral' sounding amp like the MB LMIII. That combination is universally loved on TB by guys who want a little grind and growl to their sound.

can't argue with the tone. a neutral amp isn't a requirement, but that's a pretty good combination. still, i think the best combination is svt + vt.

I really liked my VT through a poweramp. I bought a SVT-7pro, now I'm trying to find a use for the VT...

the 7 pro is that close to the sound where you don't need a vt? interesting...

I believe that head has the full SVT preamp in all its glory, but with a class D power section. They just reviewed it in Bass Player this month, and it got a pretty good review.

My guess is, it would sound much like that rack mount SVT pre through a good solid state power amp... great if you need to get loud but not have your tone vary due to the tube amp reacting differentially when its pushed at different volume levels.

VERY close, only with more definition and a distintive grind -very 400RBish. It can't do the overdriven SVT as well, so the VT still has some value.
