Yet another "recomend me a combo" thread

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone,

I'm considering buying myself an upgrade of ampage

I need either a combo or a head and stack thats:
-roughly 400 to 600 dollars (combined in terms of stack)
-Built in effects are unneeded
-As much watts as possible to be heard at gigs, without cheap China watts. You know, I need the solid kind.
-lightweight is not an issue, i can lift alot.
-something VERY versatile tone wise. I play rock, funk, jazz, grunge, etc.

Thats about it, let me know if I left anything out. I'm sorry for any typos, I'm on my iphone.

Thanks in advance!

Ben

SWR combo, Carvin combo, maybe GK combo. Used if you can test drive it first.

At that price, you better make peace with Chinese manufacture. Even the ones in that price range that are actually assembled here are full of Chinese parts.

For a few hundred more, you could buy my Aguilar AG500-112C. It's a 500-watt head with a famous GS-112 cab built in. Sounds great by itself, and even better with an extension cab. Not Chinese, either.

Yeah, whatever you end up with, make SURE it's capable of adding an ext cab, because is you want loud, you need more speakers. Wattage is a very small part of the equation, speakers are the more important part.

Many amps are 8 ohms with one 8 ohm cab and go to 4 ohms with two 8 ohm cabs. Some start at 4 and go to 2 (Peavey, for example). It will say on the amp what ohmage must be used with it.

If I were you I'd try to spend a little more dough on a rig. You won't regret it. A separate head is best since it gives you options for what speakers to use with it. The GK stuff is a good bang for your buck.

IMO, when playing with one cab I need at least 200w, preferably 300w or more. My Markbass rig is 300w at 8 ohms and 500w at 4 ohms. It's just enough for what I do (moderatley loud rock/blues/jazz).

I think you can. As long as the internal speaker is 8 ohms, you can add another 8 ohm speaker to the rig. I would suggest adding an identical GK 210 (just the cab with no power) and you will good to go.
