| | | | 6191 be mine! Late in November, snow storm be darned, I ventured to Club Bass in Toronto to play some basses. I knew he had some Sadowsky's and Roscoe's there, which was the lure. Here in the great frozen north, it's hard to find some of these 'boutique basses".
Dave Freeeman, who is the shop owner, is a bass player himself, and a cool guy. I started with Sadowsky, moved up to Century's, then an SKB. Now that one stuck in my mind. Next were Pedulla's latest offering. Let's go back to the SKB.
In the end, the most playable bass in the store, regardless of price, for me, was the SKB. I played it two or three different times, and never even looked at the finish. It could have been bright purple for all I would have seen. It felt good in my hands, and I loved it!
I spoke to my beloved, and head financier, and we decided that come summer, I would call Dave and order an SKB five string, since the one on his shelves would obviously be long gone. This is my first significant new bass since the 82 Washburn Bantam I've been playing since I bought it brand new.
Come Christmas morning, the last gift for me is an envelope. I open it, and inside is a picture of an SKB, and a wad of cash. My beloved said to me, "Call and see if the bass is still there. If it is, go get it right now!"
So, mid Christmas week, I'm at the store, two hours before opening, and Dave comes to the door, grinning and shaking his head at me. I came home with a beautiful, amazingly playable instrument.
My minor niggles - the upper strap button fell out. I had my local tech put that to rights in what would have been a very short visit, except that he held onto my bass and played it for over 15 minutes! He even joked that it would probably be about a month before the repair was good and I'd have to leave it there. Yeah, fat chance!
I've been to three rehearsals so far with the new bass. Everyone has remarked on the amazing sound, and on how beautiful it looks. Now that I've actually looked at the instrument, I have to agree. It's gorgeous! This thing punches through everything. Each note, plugged in or unplugged, rings true and clear. The slightest nuance of vibrato or bend is right out front and clearly heard. (It's meant I've been woodshedding on my 30 year plus technique, which has to be a good thing! I'm also now a five string player for the first time. That's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it for the next while! <G>)
This is, bar none that I've been able to find, the finest instrument I've ever played. I've checked out the Pedulla's and the Fodera's, and the FBass's, etc, etc, but this bass is ME!
If I feel the need for a second bass, I'll be giving Roscoe a call. Thanks to all of you for an amazing gift!

You don't happen to have any unmarried sister-in-laws do you?
BTW-Your bass doesn't happen to look anything like this, does it? http://www.clubbass.ca/instock/RSKB3005_L.html

Your story is very similar to mine, I scoured the local mucis shop scene, looking for my next bass and ended up at Club Bass.
I to, tired virtually everything Dave had hanginf on the walls and ended up walking out with my LG shortly after.
Enjoy it and play it in good health!
