Action vs. Tone

Hey Gard,

I had a quick question regarding the tone of my LG 3006. I'm used to playing basses with low action but I tried to raise the action a little bit yesterday. Wow! I couldn't believe the fat, clear, balanced tone I was getting from my roscoe!
So my question is, if I lowered my pickup to obtain the same pickup-string spacing I would get by raising the action, would I get the same tone as a slightly raised action?
Thanks,

No. What you're hearing is not the distance from string to pickup, but the arc of the string that's possible with the higher action. IMO, IME, YMMV, etc, etc

I'd assume it has a lot to do with how much fret grind you have in your tone normally.

What Jon and Bill said. Alternatively, you can do what Gary Willis preaches...play with a very light touch and set the volume on the bass (and amp) accordingly.
