I just got back my Roscoe from Carey @ Nordstrand pickups and I had dual Coils installed but left my demeter pre-amp in thinking that it just had to sound better with DC's. To my dismay I was very wrong! The pre-amp sounded very transparent and hollow with no mids or bass whatsoever. Come to find out, Carey does not like that pre-amp with his pickups because of that issue. Don't get me wrong, the demeter is a good pre-amp with bartolini's but beware if your getting any of Nordstrands pickups.
With this being said, I decided to go with a preamp that Carey did recommend which was a Aguilar OBP-3. I installed the pre-amp today following all the blueprints and when I finished, I plugged it in and the volume is probably have of all my other basses. I have to crank my amp all the way up to hear it at a decent playing level. The amp also makes a big crackling sound if I plug/unplugged in the bass and I do mean a big crackling sound! It also makes a big crackling sound if I use any of my switches on my pre-amp like active, passive or even the mute switch. All the functions such as bass, treble, mid, and blend works so I'm puzzled.
I guess I need mention that the bass had and still has 2 seperate series/parallel switches and all I did with that is cut the 2 wires leading from the demeter and hook both wires coming from the switches to the new blend knob (one top middle, one bottom middle). I went back over the blue prints making sure that every wire was hooked up correctly and they were. I also tested every wire to make sure they weren't lose on the pots. Anyone have a cue as to whats going on? PLEASE HELP! It would be great if anyone can lead me to some blue prints on wiring up dual coils with a series/parallel switches. |

What you're describing sounds like a bad ground. I'd go back through the wiring and verify that the output jack and preamp module have a good common ground. |

that's what Carey @ Nordstand pickups and Brian @ bestbassgear.com seems to think also. I ordered some new shielding and I'm going to redo all of the shielding in the bass and rewire all the grounds again and see what happens from there. Thanks for the help guys! |
