Bubinga, from billet to bass!

I just posted this at FB, but figured I'd also put it here, for all of the non-FB TBers, this is on the QT, but the BBQ will be OT until the LMAOs are all over...or, something like that...

OK, so, here's photo #1, it is a large bubinga billet that just arrived this morning, it is 48.75" tall and 18.5" wide at the widest point. Here is it "dry" and we're showing what we'd call the "front" (most of the reddish-brown color visible):

Here is the "back" also a "dry" photo:

Here is the "front", "wet" ("wet" is a bit of mineral spirits to bring the figure out a bit for photos):

And finally, here's the "back", "wet":

As this goes through the process of curing, cutting, milling, glued up to a body blank, cut out, shaped, and finished, I will be taking photos and posting them in both places, so you all can follow one piece of wood through the shop.

Enjoy!

Dang! If it's that big, why don't you just machine the whole bass out of the solid billet?

Well, things are moving quickly!

The guys checked it out, it was stable, and the moisture content was correct, so, before I even realized it, they did THIS:

Here's top #1, a Standard Plus:

Here's top #2, another Standard Plus....specifically a Century Standard 6-J Plus (Swamp Ash, Wenge fingerboard) that will be residing at a dealer near one or two TBer's (and will probably be in here to crow about it momentarily):

Top #3, this is a Custom/Signature top, lots of sapwood, but LOTS of quilt too:

And finally, #4. Care to comment, Jerry?

...wow...even I'm drooling...

I'm the wrong Jerry, but:

SLURP.

That is all.

Who me?!?

I did realize recently that I have a shortage of 6-strings. I've been quietly selling quite a few Roscoes the past couple of months. I'm down to two 6'ers, so I figure some fresh stock can't hurt!

Jerry B. - Gard actually said this today: "This Bubinga makes the top on my fretless look like cardboard". Booya!!

I'm in here too. Liked this on FB, but I like it two times good.

Aren't #2 & #4 the same?

God Bless, Ray

Yes I would... #4 looks like red hot lava rolling over a sand dune. I love it.

Nicely done Gard! This is the voodoo that you do so well.

And thank you for that cryptic thread starter.

Do I actually need to say it? "Honey, I'm gettin' wood."

That is one of the most amzingly beautiful pieces of wood I have ever seen! I look forward to watching this one come together.
