buckeye tone?

Hello all. I see a lot of roscoe's with buckeye burl tops and I was wondering if someone could describe the tone for me or give some comparisons to more common tone woods.
Thanks!

From what I've been told, it supposedly has a fairly "neutral" tone.

Or another way of putting it: none.

Now before you go off saying "Gard says buckeye burl sucks!" or some such nonesense ( ), understand what I mean - I mean it has no tone, in the sense that if you have it on a mahogany body with a maple fingerboard, it will sound like a mahogany bass with a maple fingerboard, etc, etc, etc.

It isn't a BAD wood, it just doesn't bring much to the party, tonally. If you dig how it looks, figure out the tone you're looking for, then pick your body and fingerboard woods to suit, and you'll get what you're looking for!

Wait a second, is Gard saying that buckeye burl sucks?

Seriously - thanks for the insight. I've yet to play an instrument with such a top, and it's great to learn about it. Aesthetically, it certainly makes for a gorgeous instrument.

No, he was talking about the Ohio State Buckeye's. They can make it to the big gig, but can't cut through the drummer.

....actually though, I don't think the drummers been the problem.......a couple of years ago it was them electric Gatars and last year it was some large cat from Louisiana playing "wipe-out"!

Jerry,

You can give ole Gard all the grief you want AS LONG as you don't have a bass in progress...even if you tweek him beyond reconciliation, you can always order your next bass under an alias which will have to be the case if he gets to do the "final adjustment" on your present order.

Also if you can produce a donation receipt for $100.00 or more to the Notre Dame alumni association, you can even convince Clint to jump on the "Abus-a-Gard" band wagon as well...after delivery of his new bass that is.

Of course I personally would never give ole Gard a hard time.

We will need more than $100 donation, not that I am for canning Weis this year but if it happens it will cost around 4 million. Gard did get the double whammy, LSU lost to Arkansas and the Saints lost to Tampa. To me neither team should have lost. For people who believe in Karma, both of those teams got Dogma.

I thought I'd chime in since I have an SKB with buckeye burl top and back w/ash core. To my ears, the fundamental tone I hear is from the wenge neck and fingerboard. I'm sure the ash is playing a role, but it's significantly in favor of the wenge.
