Century Standard 5 string spacing.

I saved up some money and am looking at new basses. Always have wanted a Roscoe but even the CS are at the top of my price range. Don't know if I'm patient enough to wait for a used one as they don't seem to pop up here often (which tells me something).

Did some searches could only find that most 5 strings are 18.3mm? 19mm is just a bit too much for me. 17.5 is perfect(miss my Tobias). I'm used to 16.5 on Ibanez basses.

Thanks,
Andy

I believe the spacing is 18.3mm @ the bridge. If you know that the CS is the right instrument for you, it might be worth taking a peek at this one. Good luck...

Jerry's right, 18.3mm at the bridge. I find that even though my preference is for 19, this is a very comfortable spacing, and I adjust to it very quickly.

As for the link Jerry put up, yeah....that's a VERY nice bass, and a good deal.

For whoever gets that one, you're welcome, but I won't be doing that again!

Thanks guys. About 90% sure the CS is the bass for me. Still doing research. Played two different ones here though not a Century standard I think a Centurey Sig and an LG3005 sig. Both felt perfectly natural in my hands and that was before I was functional on a five string.

Thans for the link too. Hopefully no one buys it... I'm about 75% there on the cash and will be 100% in about two weeks.

Thanks again,
Andy

I'd do it without thinking twice. I absolutely LOVE my Century Standard 5. It makes me smile every time I play it. It's a little brighter and a touch more aggressive than the LG/SKB, which aint a bad thing in the least! Growls like crazy.

It also cops a killer P-tone with the neck p/u soloed, which was a wonderful surprise. It does the P thing so well, in fact, that I dumped my American Standard P5 (which I bought brand new in August) and invested in a Shuttle 6.0 instead.

Yup, thats a steal of a deal.

Oh, and FWIW, I measured my Roscoe, and with the saddle adjustment set to center, its just below 18mm, with room to get closer, or wider.

Greg's description cracked me up. Essentially saying that this bass has a dingy(or lumpy) butt

God Bless, Ray

Go for it

Aproud1- definitely get the CS 5 string. I bought mine in September and am thrilled. I bring my Modulus Quantum to gigs, but prefer the Roscoe. The bass is very lightweight and if you play out a lot, that could be significant. Very punchy, hangs right on the strap and the low action is easy to play, even if you are not used to the string spacing. I don't quite have "Banana Hands", but they aren't puny and I find it easy to play. Besides, the holidays are around the corner and we all need a little somethn', somethin' now and again for us. Good Luck, Pete C.

Thanks Pete. Nice looking bass.

I thought I had money but something has gone wrong with a return and the money hasn't come back to me yet. Now the company is saying It was a miscommunication and I should "hopefully" see it in 5 - 7 business days.

Now thats just torture.

Can anyone describe the neck on the Century standard? Does it feel close to any other necks out there? Thin, thick front to back? Etc.

Thanks.

I'm sure Gard would be the authority on this, but I'll give it a go...

Front to back is nice and thin, but not so thin that it feels like a toy. The contour is perfect... The best way I can describe it is this: Make a "C" shape with your hand.. It fits *right* in there, like it was shaped to fit... "Melts in your hand" is how I refer to it.

Basically, it's very much like the standard neck on an LG/SKB 5-string, so if you like that feel, you'll love this bass. (I own both an LG-3005 and a Century Standard 5, so I feel my description is accurate) .

Cool. Thanks.

I have been doing research on several basses (got married last year and somehow the bass funds are much harder to come by) and have seen where people have compared this neck to a p bass. While I like p basses I'd rather not play something that feels like that all the time.

P-Bass? HAH!

Naw, man... Nothing like a P-bass neck. My P5 (while not a bad shape or girth at all) felt like a tree trunk in comparison.

I've read before, the only difference between Cent. Std. necks and LG/SKB/Cent necks is that it has three pieces of maple, instead of two maple and one of purpleheart.

Big +1 on this bass, friend. I saw it a couple days ago in person and it looks very nice. There's a bit of grain enhancement going on, and the dings on the bottom are not large or very obvious IMO. At that price, it's one heck of a deal.

"P-Bass Neck, We don't need (or have in this case)no stinkin' P-Bass neck"

P-Bass, not at all. When I think P-bass neck, I think more rounded & fatter like baseball bat. The CS neck is thinner and the radius is such that it is easier to fret. Plus, Roscoe sets the action really low (incredibly low) and the finger board feels "natural" in the setup.. A neck that is more rounded, couldn't pull this off, IMO

I believe that's true. Maybe it's just the difference between fretted and fretless that's throwing me, but it almost feels like the neck on my Century Standard is just a hair wider than the one on my LG. Either way, it's the easiest playing fretted bass I've ever owned.
