I was surprised by the dots too.

That was a custom build for someone, and they paid a different price entirely, based on the "old" Century Standard, not the present version. If you check carefully, you will see that the neck is a maple/purpleheart/maple neck, not a maple/maple/maple neck. The customer on that one liked several things about the present CS, but wanted some features that weren't available, so we worked something out for him. In the end, it didn't hit the target he had tonally (not through any fault of the bass, just the wrong combination of woods/specs to do it, IMO), and he decided to sell it.
...we are thinking of adding a color for the CS line though, our new "favorite color", transparent orange.
Any opinions?

Darnit...the Gardfather beat me to the post button. Thanks for the info, Gard!

I've already decided that when I get a CS5 (and I will), it will be orange.

Speaking of the ride, how much do you want for it?

...tell you what, you buy me a new '09 E, and you can have this one...
...my SO just picked up one ('09 Element, Omni Blue Pearl - too "girly" of a color for me, but nice) yesterday, and while the differences/improvements are incremental, they are VERY impressive. A great ride is just greater now...

It is perfectly acceptable if your SO owns and drives an Element...provided your SO is female!
Regardless of color, a real bass enthusiast such as yourself has no business behind the wheel of one of those "sensitive wagons". These special vehicles are reserved for folks more preoccupied with "carbon footprints" and "freeing Tibet" (wherever that is) than chord structures and hammering out a solid low end foundation.
My suggestion would be to look into a Land Rover LR3. These legendary standards project a true statement of stylish, cultural, earthy dominance so reflective of todays' bass afficinado all the while providing the driver with a ride second to none.

This way, whenever she aggravates you in the future, you can exclaim, "SO! You're out of your Element."
Thank you. I'll be here all week.
...
On a serious note, the Element has to be in the absolute top five of great gigging vehicles. A couple of my cronies - one a keyboardist, and the other a drummer - have them, and their ability to swallow cargo is really impressive. I'm also a fan of the Fit. Last summer I had a 'boat gig' (literally...a yacht out on the bay, although the homage to Tribal Tech still works) and we carpooled to Pier 43 in SF. The keyboardist's Fit was perfect - all of his stuff, all of my stuff, both of us...AND the tenor player and his rig. Amazing.
Ok, I'm done. Sorry. I promise to put the "End hijacking now!" bumper sticker on my truck. |

Typical of these basses, it plays effortlessly. It has this woody 'honk' to it that reminds me of my fretless LG. Overall, it's got a more "old school" warmth and less snap to its tone than most Roscoe's I've played. I really dig this color, too - especially with the matching headstock.
(FYI: The guy this bass was built for.. He drives an "E" as well.)

Jerry, "The Big Lebowski" is on my 5 favorite movies of all time list. I need to get her to see it, as she never has.
"That rug really tied the room together..."
"Tell those ****** at the league office I don't roll on Shabbas!!!"
As for the best gigging vehicles ever, I've had a few good ones (Civic, which wasn't bad; Volvo 240 wagon, which was great until the electrical system went t/u...then it just sucked...). By far, I have NEVER run across a better vehicle for a musician than the E. The Fit is nice, a fellow Roscoehead has one, and seems happy with it, but I felt very confined in it (I'm 6'2") after being used to my E... Quote:

My top-5 too, Gard. I remain convinced that John Goodman deserved an Oscar for the movie.
Anyway, back to the thread topic. Or, as Walter would say, "This isn't 'Nam, dude. There are rules."
RTL - thanks for the review on the sound. I'm kind of surprised, as I would've guessed there would've been some more snap & bark. It really is a cool looking instrument, though. As my rabbi at my local store says, "This is the right bass for someone. Not me. But someone." |

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Jul 2008 Location: Austin, TX | | | VroomVroom - Yeah, I was also quite surprised by the somewhat relaxed character of the bass. I'm used to Bartolini pickups and preamp, with all that growl, bark, and sense of urgency in their response. The Nordstrand/9V Nordstrand combo just seems to be different entirely. Maybe it was the strings (which I think were DR Black Beauties), or the rig I played it through (Eden WTX 260/Eden NEO 210), but it just didn't seem to jump at me like most Roscoe's tend to.
FWIW, I also played that gorgeous black and gold LG-3005 that they got in recently. Killer birdseye maple board, and probably the lightest Roscoe I've ever picked up. It had Nordstrand DC-5's in it with the familiar 18V Bartolini pre. It definitely shared some characteristics with the teal Century Standard 6 (not as much snap/bite/etc.), and sounded a little woolier than what I'm used to in my LG (Bartolini/Bartolini).
I guess it just must be the Nordstrand pickups that I'm hearing. Anyone else have the same experience?

Ouch...but hey mechanics need to make a living too!
I would however cut you a smokin' deal/trade on a '97 Discovery SE7 for a new shop custom. I've got an idea for an LG that I will ponder before ordering.
I was of course joking regarding your SO..I'm sure she's a nice gal.
Have a swell day.

The last time I played it, however, I boosted the upper mids a bit, and....pow! It came to life. Definitely a different sound than I've come to expect from a Roscoe, but it was certainly one I liked. I think I'm just a fan of Bart/Bart when it comes to my Roscoes (shaken, not stirred ), but it'd be interesting to hear some more of the electronics options out there. |
