I like Gard's suggestion as to spec's. I would do an ash body, but that's just my personal taste coming into play. Birdseye maple board will look killer with that top, so that is a no-brainer.
I honestly think, since you have the classic "J" sound covered with your Geddy, that the JM is probably the way to go.

I see Koa matched to mahogany quite often - must be something to it - even though my Koa top won't really effect tone. I like the "edge" you get from ash, but I have the edge and punch in my jazz (which I plan to keep) so I think something more full, fat and round would be a nice change.
Yes, keeping it. One of these will eventually be a keeper. I think I ruled out 6 string - nice as mine was. Just too much neck. I ruled in Century body - I like the feel. I loved that pickup arrangement on my Laklands so I imagine I'll like it here, too. The wood - we'll see. Jimmy has a mahogany body so it can't be all bad.
I know I'm spoiled and like having them built "for me" instead of buying "of the rack" so to speak. Just something about having a "custom" order. GIves me an excuse to bug Gard and give Greg a little business.

Koa/mahogany would be sweet. Not sure about BEM - how about ebony?

As for the bass, you going 34" or 35" scale? | +1 for adoption!! :-)

Sorry, it is a valid risk though. Straight grain maple is much more stable. |

Gard, any insight or experience to add?
Should I worry about a BEM board at all? I think look wise the maple is a nice contrast to that dark Koa. Straight maple would be fine, too.

I believe that Roscoe uses a bit more graphite on the maple finger board necks, which helps some. Still, it is a bit like rolling dice. |

It can be a bit more "squirrely" sometimes, because it's slab sawn instead of quarter sawn like our straight grained maple, but it is certainly nothing to be concerned about. Typically, we find that the trussrod needs just a bit more of a tweek than other 'boards, but they stay stable once set up.
You want BEM, get BEM. |
