I spend WAY to much time listening to the little voice. I have had a few really good basses and still tried something else because of that. As my wife says, I need to just get a good bass and then quit worrying about the minutia of tone issues. Pretty much any Roscoe is going to sound great. I know I will like the way it feels/plays because I have never played a Roscoe 5 that I didn't like.
I appreciate your comments. |

....I don't think any of us truly gets "inside" the tone of a particular instrument in a few days. I firmly believe that until you've lived with it for a few months - or even YEARS - you cannot know the intricacies of HOW it all fits together with your playing. You gotta get your sweat in the thing, and notice, and then start to go beyond noticing to just knowing, how the bass responds to your touch in each situation.
My basses have been with me to the point that they're another arm on my body before I really KNOW how they sound and play...but that take more than just "time" it takes "TIME", if you follow. Example - I've had "The Stormtrooper" for over a year now, and I'm JUST beginning to "get" that bass... |

I need to take my own advice.

Bummer. I was already thinking up the specs for the next one...

To do that, you must think up the specs, and then order and buy it. |

Step up to a Century Custom, carved top, 5 piece neck and fancy inlays for a few hundred less than a new Standard Plus and get it in a week... |

LightGroove is right, it's ridiculous to "sweat the small stuff" when it comes to these basses and woods. They all sound amazing, play wonderfully and look beautiful.
It's hard to pass up a good deal on a fantastic used bass.

The Signature bass has an Aguilar preamp and I prefer Bartolini. I also think I want an "un-inlaid" fingerboard.
So, instant gratification, or wait for the Koa top to be built... |

| | He who has ears let him hear .... | | Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Happy Bottom, VA | | | Steve while that Aguilar will def. have its thing going it pairs REALLY nicely with the Roscoe. Thats personally my favorite pre paired with the standard Bart pups. I agree about the inlays not my thing either.
Im always on the fence regarding specing one vs buying used.I want to support Roscoe buy buying new but cant always pull the plug. Spec wise you can get visually in your head what you want but sonically will never know until its built. Obviously Greg has an outstanding CS policy..so should you spec one and it not fit you ..he's really easy to work with.
Again..if your finding yourself in the whats ifs...and "I hope this makes me happy but what if it doesnt "then I encourage the safer "used" route...These you can hang onto for a longer period and get to know them with out a substantial loss..new is a little trickier...

ALWAYS go for the known commodity. Wood is psychotic. Same exact spec on two different instruments, and I can almost guarantee every one of us would easily pick one over the other, based on our individual sonic preferences.
I've done three custom builds. I'm one-for-three. That's a hard economic lesson. Unless I can share some of that risk (my local store is pretty awesome in this regard....we agree on a spec, and if I don't like the outcome, it simply goes on the wall for retail sale) that's a path I won't go down again.
Life is much easier when you can play an instrument, fall in love with it, buy it, and go play music. Maybe that order is skewed a little bit in this instance, but thankfully we're talking about a vendor with a very fair return policy. That wee bit of risk pales in comparison to a custom build.
Just my take....as always, this and $10 will get you some medium picks and .010 high-E strings from Rocket. |

The bass is basically new and Greg made me a great offer. I loved the Wenge board I had on my 6 so I'm guessing I'd like this one as well.
Century vs SKB body style and "perceived" difference in the "hang" of the bass is pretty minimal - maybe one fret. I think most Roscoe players switch pretty easily between Century and SKB bodies. |

Nice mix of woods, body style, and tones. But I did play and love that SKB fretless with the unlined ebony board.
