That's cool. If I do anything - and I'm thinking I will tomorrow - it'll be the SKB fretted and Century fretless.

Ryan, that's as nice a fretless as you'll find. Get it.

Yep. As I noted in another thread, I played that one today and loved it. I'm shocked it's still there. Also possibly the most beautiful bass I've laid hands on.

I'm seriously thinking about it, if you don't take it (or if I beat you to it).

If you're looking for help to NOT buy a bass you of all people should know this is NOT the place ;-)

I am receiving similar "help" in my pending purchase.

As much as I like this top, I believe I am going to go with a used bass. Knowing my history - and my current finances - I think used is the safest route for me.

Thanks for all the great discussion on this thread - and a couple others - as I work through figuring out how to once again be a part of the Roscoe family.

Sounds like a good choice - now, HAVE A LITTLE PATIENCE!!

(but you knew that already, right?)

As far as the "Roscoe family" comment...
Once you've been, you never leave...

Surprise! I am back to using this top again. I have been looking at other basses - new and used - but nothing really speaks to me. Sure, any of them would be great basses, and there are some nice used deals, but I keep thinking about this top and how it would look on an ash body as a Century Standard Plus 5 string with CB's, a maple board and black hardware.

Model: Century Standard Plus 5 ($2,499)
Body: Swamp Ash w/"My" Koa Top
Finish: Oil
Preamp: Bartolini 3-Band
Pickups: Bartolini CB's
Neck: 3-Piece Maple Neck
Fingerboard: Maple, Fretted
Hardware: Black (+$75)
Case: Roscoe Single Gigbag

$2,574

I know a few of you think going custom build is a little risky - especially with my history and maybe it is - but other than it being a 6 string (which was just a little too much for my hands and my needs) my first custom build turned out really nice. Maybe I'm rolling the dice, but I seem to be connected to this top in some inexplicable way so maybe I just need to give in to the feeling and do it.

Thumbs up

Go for it Steve! It'll be a great bass and you deserve one.

Personalize this one! You should have Gard and the guys inlay your initials at the 12th fret to help you hold on to this one.

That may be the only way. Who would want to buy a bass with SJC at the 12th fret... ;-)

Don't waste your money having them do a custom inlay. Why, you ask?

Well, I have a Dremel tool and a woodburning kit. For 3 easy payments of $19.99, you can send your new bass to me, and I will personalize it for you. You have my guarantee that it will be THE most unique bass around.

I don't think so. I think it's a good way to get exactly what you want for your money. It might be risky if the spec was completely wacky, but yours isn't. Heck, if you don't like it, contact me, I'll probably take it off your hands.

There are a bunch of people laughing out loud right now... or rolling their eyes...or both. You know who you are.

Honestly, it isn't the spec. I know I'll love just about any Roscoe. I have guilt issues. Guilt about spending a lot of money for a bass for myself when my cheap, used passive jazz is working just fine and there are so many other things my family could use - like me not being in debt.

steve- i struggled with the exact same issues (gard can verify). i had a pretty good idea what i wanted and it still took me took me like 3 years to finally pull the trigger on a used lg. i had to move some stuff to make it happen so i could feel less guilty...

not saying "get over it" or anything like that... more like saying "i completely understand".
