contemplating a fretted build

While I dig my spalted maple fretted, I'm just too smitten with the lighter weight and oil finish on my fretless to leave well enough alone. So I'm pondering a new build to replace the spalt/cedar. So far this is the leading top candidate:

Leaning towards ash for the body as I want light, light, light. But I like a good mid punch so I'm wondering if maybe alder or cedar might be the way to go assuming there is a light blank.

Beyond that, thinking maple/wenge/maple neck. Not sure on the f/b - wenge, rw, or maybe sapwood.

Too many choices and not enough money...

Very nice top Todd!

I'm betting that Gard could find you a real nice light piece of Spanish cedar. That along with the maple/wenge/maple neck and a sapwood cocobolo finger board would kill tone wise!

Of course your specs would sound excellent too, just a bit more aggressive sounding with the ash. ..... I guess though if you add the wenge finger board with the ash it might tame it down a bit.

Regardless, I love the top and yes, oil, oil oil!

The Gardenator and I are trying to nail down the specs. So many choices...

ok, edging closer:

myrtle top (though walnut may be a possibility), oil finish
cedar body (lightweight)
maple/wenge/maple neck
wenge sapwood fingerboard (though regular wenge a possibility)

Waiting to see the f/b and if there is a walnut that floats my boat more than the myrtle.

This Roscoe thing can become addictive.

I been studyin' on another Century 6 since I bought the first one and can't decide on all the details. The JJ6 could last me forever but I still want another Roscoe

well, that myrtle piece won't fit a century so we're back to the drawing board. Or wood pile as it were. But do have an interesting fingerboard candidate:

Love love love that board.

First time I've seen any Wenge Sapwood...very unique and great contrast.

lol

It makes no sense but it sure is fun!

Back on topic:
Yeah Todd! Just find a similar top that's large enough. That Finger board would look awesome with a similar top.

Actually that is cocobolo. Here's wenge one that is crazy - I've never seen it this light:

This top will work with a Century, but I kinda want to go darker. Now I'm wondering about a two-tone kinda ziracote. Urg...

That fretboard is nuts! Love it! (the cocobolo, that is)

The wenge sapwood is cool, too.

I think coco is tre heavy though, so that runs kinda counter to one of my main goals.

I'm wondering if there is some ziracote or equivalent that can to a "natural" take on a yin/yang. Not that I'm trying to cop a Victor Wooton thing...just trying to honor my Buddhist tendencies That fingerboard is already part of the way there.

Yep, coco can be heavy, and so can ziracote. A thinner-than-usual top could help alleviate that concern, AND that might force the issue on a constrasting shim between the back and the top.

I'm not sure I want to use the word "force" around Gard...

Man...you twick me, man.

Anyway, the REAL Wenge Sapwood is very different as well. Blond and unique. My next build will also be a little off the mainstream Roscoe path.

...will be discussing the neck construction here soon with Keith and company.

Thumbs up

IMHO....Cocobolo would make an awesome oiled top and would look really cool with that wenge sapwood fingerboard!

my "I'm bored on Fri night" mockups. The fingerboard isn't right as I just stretched a shot of a portion of the board. The bodies are a guess at how they'd go on the template. The minister of style likes the flame myrtle.

Nice editing work. Three flavors of delicious, for sure, but I agree with the minister....although, the one on the right is very close. Whatever that wood is, it's beautimous.

Not that you're asking for opinions, but I'm really loving more subtle tops these days. Quilt is gorgeous, but flame and - again - whatever is on the right - really resonate with me.

I chose bachelorette #1 with #3 a close 2nd

Very classy looking bass. IMO the top blends great with the sap wood board.
