A couple cool things...

...first, we got this really nice piece of spalted quilt maple recently, it was thick enough to make a matching front and back. However, the back was a bit "wobbly" on it's own, so we needed to get it glued up right away, so we laminated it up to a really nice piece of Spanish cedar, and cut it to be a Century (or potentially Century Signature) V. Here's the front and back of it:

Thing #2

OK, we came across this INTENSE quilted bubinga sapwood, just amazing stuff. However, the thing with sapwood is it's near the exterior of the tree, close to the bark. This piece was REALLY close to the bark....

...heck, it has a whole bunch of bark in it!

Anyhow, the quilt is just too good to not try and build something with it, so...we glued it to a piece of ash and cut a Century (or Century Signature) V (notice a trend? ).

Here is a photo of the raw wood and the bass just after it was rough carved. Note: we are leaving some of the bark in to make the top fill in - we think it looks great, but we also realize some folks might just not "get it", and we won't be offended if you don't.

Personally, I dig the heck out of this!

Anyhow, photos!

I'm sucker for spalted maple so I'm going to have to say that I like #1 better. I realy like the symetry of it too.
...........Although I'm sure that #2 will realy have some bark to it's tone!

Ruff, Ruff!
