D'addario Strings on a Roscoe

I was bummed to hear that D'addario is discontinuing a most sizes of individual super long strings. They are keeping .125, but not the other .100, .85, .65, .45 on my Roscoe LG-3005. It's not life altering, they do make SL sets in 105.85.65.45 or .100.80.65.45 so there is little compromise, but I was wondering for Gard and the boys as well as end users what will you switch to? Thanks for your input.

Dave, they custom-wind our strings to our specs (when you're buying thousands of strings, they do nice things for you! ), so this won't affect our situation - at least nothing has been said to us, and it SHOULDN'T.

We've been considering getting them to make "Roscoe" strings for us, packaged sets of "our" strings. Maybe this will help us decide to go for it - there is a bit of setup cost/time involved, so it's not a slam dunk yet, however.

Well, you'd have at least one dedicated customer starting with me. There's nothing more annoying than having to piece together string sets... I have some REALLY spendy Infelds on my Roscoe right now, and, even though they sound REALLY good, they're a little too squishy, methinks. Even though the stock strings that were on it were dead when I got the bass, I think I liked them better.

I'll tell you what... I'll design the packaging (4 color folded insert and 1 color string envelopes) AND I'll source the printer... in exchange for a couple of years worth of strings.

Let's get this ball rolling!

Got some clarity, if you order quantity of 50 or more per string, they will still make them so it won't affect you guys, just the 5 at a time guys like myself that won't be able to order them in SL length.

Addison, they do all that "in-house" already, we just need to commit to the start-up with them. Need to work on it still, but it will probably be happening by summer. Thanks for the offer though!

Dave, for the time being, you can call and order what you need from us, if you can't get it elsewhere.

Gard,
I would definitely be interested in buying the "Roscoe" strings from Y'All.

While I love the Black Beauties on my bass, I think I may want to go back to the ones you had on the bass originally (nickels) due to the already high midrange from the bass. Also, I think they would sound nice on my Modulus.. Any thoughts on that?

Probably depends a bit on the electronics, but in general I'd think a set of bright-ish nickels would sound great on a Modulus Q.

Gard knows how I feel about the Roscoe branded strings...yeah, baby, yeah! Especially after he jinxed me on my last set of XL's.

Thanks Jerry- the Modulus has Bartolini pickups - soap bars, with active bass, mid, treble (NTMB) preamp; 35" scale. I think the same bridge as my Roscoe, but different material. The brightness of the graphite neck/fingerboard and Sugar Maple/ Alder body should sound nice with softer nickels. I have DR High Beams now and have to roll off the treble.

Don't scare me like that Dave!

I already lost the Slow Wounds several years ago. I don't think I could bear losing the XL's!

Of course I suppose I could purchase string stretcher! I found one the other day at the hardware store between the wire stretcher and a nice set of square hole saws!

Pete, I'd say they're worth a shot. My guess is they'll be pretty close in feel, and at first even in sound, to your DR's. The D'Add's are pretty bright by nickel standards IMO, but they quickly "settle" in to that happy place where the low mids are emphasized. My old Q6 had EMG's with the Bart NTMB, and in all the years I played that bass I never thought to try nickels on it. Go figure.

So Gard. Will I be able to get the 7 string sets from you guys still? Will it still be a Dean Markley string for the high F? I have been using Ken Smiths because they are the only thing I can get locally on a short notice. But I would buy Roscoe strings regularly. IF YOU MAKE THEM, I WILL BUY!
