Darth Roscoe

Hi R-Heads!

Remember Brendan's "Darth" Rosoce. It's still in my possession...but it's not getting the playtime I thought it would.

Anyone interested? Black SKB3006, Bart pickups and pre-amp, 34" scale (which was what drew me to it...or was it the force?) 18mm string spacing, ebony fretted board, maple/purpleheart/maple neck.

I've realized I do need 19mm spacing and a gloss-finished neck.

If anyone has a 34" scale 19mm string spacing with a gloss finished neck 6er, let me know, and thanks!

Z

Shouldn't you be able to expand the string spacing to 19mm with the Hipshot bridge?

The neck finish should polish to gloss too, mine are, but I'm thinking of sanding them back to satin.

Are you serious? I thought the neck had to be a little wider to accommodate it.

If I put the Hipshot on it, then I'll hang on to it since I just lowered the action and it plays fabulously.

Oh Gard.....what say you??

You can push the saddles a bit, but there is a limit to how much you can do that, because of the width of the neck - just as you point out.

Eventually, you push the string off the fingerboard....you have to accommodate the wider spacing with a wider neck, and you really can't do that with a completed bass.

Sorry, but I don't think you can get 19mm without a whole new instrument...you can try to take the C and B strings to the edge of the 'board, then respace the E-G strings, see what you get, but it won't make it all the way to 19mm.

I was sure I saw in a few Roscoe 6er threads that owners said they could get 19mm out of it. I know I can get 19 with my 5ers, but of course, that's a whole different story.

To get em spaced all the way to 19mm, it'll definitely take a bit wider neck----the neck on my 19mm spaced Century 3006 is noticeably wider than my friend's standard spaced SKB3006---we've compared them side by side.

But, this post is kinda useless, as Gard already answered the question........

Yep -

It was kinda sad to take it to a play a show ("The Wiz") and get a fanstastic sound out of it, then be given a directive to do a bit of a "slap/pop" solo and realize, "Damn...I wish I brought my (name omitted since this is a Roscoe thread)" just because of the string spacing.

Here are the pics from the original thread - The Dread Pirate Roscoe - I was excited about this bass back then. It has a phenomenal sound, especially with the mahogany body which makes the mids sing, and the maple in the top and neck and ebony board give it the brightness it needs to cut through.

I still love the action, too...

I remember when Brendan got that bass----I've always thought that one looked killer with the all black look.

It's too bad on the spacing, but I hear ya 100%, and feel your pain, so to speak. All three of my Centuries have custom string spacing---both of my 3005's have 20mm bridge spacing, and my 3006 is 19mm spaced at the bridge.

Perhaps since I'm not playing it as much, that's a sign to still hold on to it...tone, woods, action, feel, playability, looks are all +s, and the string spacing is the only - and only by a "silly millimeter" (that was a cigarette commercial back in day when cigarette jingles and slogans were permissable).

Also saved me some $$$ in going for a Hipshot and finding out it won't work, so I got that going for me...

hi...not sure if I'm overlooking something, but doesn't your Roscoe already have a hipshot adjustable bridge? I just looked at the pics, might have missed it having another bridge though

^ +1 on the Hipshot bridge. I'm a bit confused there too.

Mike Z,
That is a cool looking stealth Roscoe 6'er. I don't slap much these days but in the past I have done what Gard described, which is setting 19mm between the C, G & D and going slightly closer on the others. It actually worked out nicely for slap style. Just be careful that don't get the C too close to the edge of the finger board. I had a tendency to pull it over the edge when the adrenaline got to pumping.
