FWIW, with a bit of adjusting to the moment technique-wise, I can CONVINCE you you're hearing an amplified upright with my gnarly diamondwood-fingerboarded JB-equipped Stormtrooper.

Trick: play with your RH fingers OVER the fingerboard, favor the neck pickup, BAM, big fat round warm growly upright flavor....it's not an UPRIGHT, but it's a darn good approximation.

I have been talking to others who have more experience than I, and who don't dwell on decisions as I do. I'm starting to favor this bass for a couple reasons.

First, it's less expensive. $600 is $600.

I am a little concerned about it being a little aggressive, but as other's who are more wise than I have said, it's easier to dull down a bright bass than brighten a dull bass.

This, along with the nice deal Greg is willing to do on the used SKB CS+5 fretted Bubinga/Wenge bass makes it very tempting to completely change my stable of basses in a matter of days.

I was going to mention technique as well. Greg wan't going for the "upright vibe" in his clip.

As so many will argue on other threads, I know nothing replaces an upright (I was just playing one yesterday) but I just want something more in that vein for the occasional jazz gig.

I'm very close to pulling the trigger on both these basses. Greg may get a call tomorrow.

Do it! When I favored the neck pup and cut the treble a bit, it sounded nice and jazzy. Maybe just throw flats on there and you're cookin'.

I was hoping I'd hear from the jewelry store today. Robin's custom ring is supposed to be done this week. Waiting for the final total on that. Last week I brought in some old stuff we don't wear and they said they'd give me $400 of credit for it on the new ring so that was cool. The price on that has dropped SIGNIFICANTLY so I don't feel as bad about getting a bass...or even two.

OK. There's just no way I can swing 2 Roscoe basses at this time. As much as I'd like a fretless, I just can't do it. A fretted 5 is my most practical and logical purchase so I am pulling my hat out of the ring on this one.

That p'up placement is sick, and I should know! I'm sure the tone on this bass is constantly in beast mode, but at the same time, it can be smooth. Like I told Gardo, my Roscoe is like a Swiss Army knife of basses. Mine has "speed bumps", much to Gard's dismay, but she's still a work of functional art!

Yup, this one had me playing my blue angel last night. Pretty much the same spec, but with six strings...

The tone is absolutely ferocious. (If only my intonation on the 'C' string could get into the same neighborhood.) Great spec, and as Greg's clip above proves, the sound is IN THERE.

Someone head over to Rocket to buy this thing, if for no other reason than to protect me from myself.

What is the weight on this bad boy, and where are the side dots? Do they line up with the frets (like on a typical fretless) or are they in between the fret locations like a fretted?

The side dots are where the fret would be. The bass weighs in right at 10 lbs. Not the heaviest I've played by a long stretch, but also not the lightest...

So, I'm not the only one interested in this bass, huh...

I wish it were a pound or so less. I've had issues with heavy basses before.

I like heavy basses. I am trying to decide between this, or the SKB3005. Or doing a custom order. Or buying an NS EUB. Or buying 8" straight pipes for my Peterbilt.

Decisions, decisions.

Do it. This one is killer and is probably all the fretless you could ever ask for. I can't do 10 lb basses but if you like them it doesn't get much better than this.

Yeah, both the fretless basses that Greg has right now are killer in their own way. I have played the SKB and love the unlined ebony board. However, I really like the Century body style. However, that SKB played and felt amazing. While any bass can sound pretty decent (as Gard mentioned earlier) with attention to technique, eq, etc., I can't help but think the ebony board would "feel" more like an upright and that is what I would use a fretless for more than anything - my "jazz" gigs. It might find it's way to church once in a while as well. It's also one of the few SKB's that I like the look of as well.

If Ryan would just buy one or the other, my decision would be easier.

Of course, none of the groups I fill in with now really care if I play a fretted or fretless so...

FWIW - I've had an NS EUB and while it looks cool, sounds nice and gives you the feel of an upright, I found that my Rob Allen Mouse actually sounded more like a mic'ed upright than the EUB.

I know nothing about pipes for your truck.

As a recovering upright player, let me just say that it doesn't matter one bit what fingerboard material you use, it ain't gonna feel like an upright one tiny bit!

I know. I play upright once in a while - not enough to have any serious chops - and know what you mean.

Someone told me I made a MIM fretless jazz "sound like an upright" so I'm sure I could coax a similar tone from a Roscoe.

You guys pool your money, and I'll ship one of the basses to each of you. It'll be a suprise either way, and you won't have the burden of having to make a decision...

Just trying to help.

This bass is on it's way to North Dakota.

You can get a raffle number for getting it used in a couple months by sending me a PM.

Seriously, I told my wife to kick my ass if I talk about doing anything stupid for at least 6 months.
