Flatwound tone on a fretted LG3005?

One thing I love about the Roscoe tone is how perfectly it sits in a live mix... r&b/funk, rock, just about anything.

I like the nice, giant quality of the low-end (first position)... perfect for grooving. But playing the upper frets on the D and G strings in a fill or solo break, and the tone takes on a whole new personality: round, compressed, modern but warm, and in-your-face.

I've been playing an orchestral pit gig lately (Stephen Schwarz's Children of Eden), and I think I've found the one place where "the" Roscoe tone doesn't really sit as much as I'd like. The modern-ish quality of it sticks out a little too much amongst the woodwinds, French horn, etc.

Curiosity got the best of me and I put a set of TI flats on the LG3005 last night.

It seems to have given the tone a pillowy, Precision-like low end which seems ideal for this gig. But I can't make up my mind on whether or not the sweetness of the upper-frets is too far gone.

So I did a quick search. I don't hear about too many people using flats on fretted Roscoes.

Am I unknowingly doing something counter-productive?

Anyone else try this? What were your thoughts?

Dave,
I put a set of TI flats on one of my Roscoe's quite a while back. They actually sounded really nice, but in the end, I just preferred the sound of the nickel RW.

IMO, you'll probably accomplish what you're looking for easier by experimenting more with the p/u blend control and some slight EQ variations. The neck p/u really nails a great precision sound while retaining great upper register tone.
