GASsing for another Roscoe

Man, I am gassing for another Roscoe. Since the accident I am pretty much stuck to sitting in a recliner. Except for a visit to the doctor I have been home. Seeing all these dream Roscoe basses has given me such GAS that only a Roscoe can cure. I have time to think about what I would like. I am hoping once this accident is behind me I will be able to move forward on a Dream Roscoe.

I am a big fan of Amboyna, so it would have to have an Amboyna top. So, Roscoe Heads, give my your opinion on the rest of woods I should use.

Amboyna -Top Wood

Glad you're getting better

How about something a little different for a body wood. I had an Elrick that had a Black Limba body and it looked awesome and was very light. Sounded great too, of course. And my favorite wood for a fingerboard is what I have on my Century -- exhibition grade Cocobolo. Just beautiful.

I wonder if Keith has some Amboyna in stock that you could see pics of. You could choose one that you really like.

+1 for cocobolo on the FB.

Body wood, I would go ash. Everytime I have a favorite, it happens to be ash.

Hmmmmmm..... Gee I don't know Crash. +1 with regards to an ash body but,,, You might want to consider a nice alder body with a beautiful redwood top. Maybe a nice maple and.... no no.. Wenge neck and finger board. Maybe even talk Keith into chambering the body a bit... tone till the end of time....

OK.....

White Korina body
Maple finger board
Wedge neck (maple/cocobolo/maple)

I really like the Roscoe's with cocobolo as a finger board but IMO it wouldn't be aesthetically appealing with the Amboyna top.

I'm with ya', Joe. I LOVE cocobolo (top, fingerboard, neck stringer, etc.), but from an aesthetic point of view, I'm not so sure about that combo. If you dig the type of tone you get from cocobolo, there are other rosewood and rosewood-esque choices that will get the job done.

I don't think I have ever seen Black Limba, I will have to do a search.

I have an LG 3005 with a beautiful Exibition Redwood top and an Ash body, Highly figured Birdseye Maple Fretboard, Classic Barts and Demeter preamp, a Gospel players dream.

Nice...

Sorry you couldn't make it to the SD GTG Crash. Heal up and come on out when you get the chance and We'll throw another GTG to fit your schedule.

Meanwhile, Munjibunga posted some pics of last Sunday's get together.

I will check out the pictures. Yeah, it sucked not being able to travel. My wife got to go and attend the ASAE conference at the San Diego Convention Center. She said the weather was great, in the 70s and no humidity. I definitely want to make it out there, I will have to start planning.

How about an all-sapwood purpleheart fingerboard?

Light colored, contrasting the amboyna, and not maple?

Take that wood in the center of a wenge wedge neck and yer set.

body woods? if'n ye got ash already, then alder or cedar. Wonder if Keith has any body grade myrtle? walnut?

Yeah SMPUGH was making my LG3005 sing baby. He put it through all the tones and styles, nice clear chords, some aggressive finger style and some nice slap, he was even getting some of that Wooten vibe with the double thumb hits.

I love taking that bass to the different guitar shops and letting some other bassist try it out. It always brings a smile and a wow.

Now I do like finger boards with Sapwood and Spalting. My old 3006 had purple heart with sapwood and spalting. My Classic LG2005 has the Brazilian Rosewood with Sapwood, it looks sweet. Keith said to get that fingerboard now, it would be an $1100 upgrade.

I think SMPUGH just bought the LG3000 with the Sun Burst Quilt, that has an Alder Body with a Demeter preamp. If he was the one, I can't wait to hear it.

The one thing that is so cool about Roscoe, it is like going to Baskin Robbins except there are more than 33 flavors to choose from. With all the wood combinations, pickups and preamps it gives you an almost endless choice of tones and that is not to mention adding a tone wood in the center.

To all you guys not in the Roscoe forum, do yourself a favor and try a Roscoe before you buy your next bass, you will be glad you did.

Well, Clint and I have already talked on this a bit, and I'm sure it will be the primary topic of conversation tomorrow when I go for a visit.

My opinion:

Swamp Ash for the body, MAYBE alder, if Clint wants something a bit more "polite".

Wenge fingerboard, my favorite with Amboyna.

Wenge wedge neck...because...well, just BECAUSE.

Bart pickups (standard for smoother, CB for aggressive), and for the pre, well, that's Clint's call...he's all into that Glockenclang thingy...

...I'd go Aguilar 3-band...

Clint, I sent you a pm of a pic of Black Limba. I believe it's also called Korina.

I like Gard's idea of a Wenge wedge neck too.

Exactly, Black Limba = Korina

Aguilar Preamp? SMPUGH brought his LG3000 over to the house the other day, it as a Aguilar Preamp. Man, that has so much mid bite even with the mid turned down. I guess for the classic rock, the Aggie will cut through any mix, I mean this bass is a Ken Smith slayer. I mean don't get me wrong, Ken builds a nice bass, but this bass smpugh has can sound like a Ash bodied Smith but gets much more aggressive to cut through the mix.

Back to my bass, the Wenge/Wedge neck looks awesome and once adjusted you could take it through a big climate change and it would never move. Who has a Wenge fingerboard that they can show me, I was thinking about Ebony, but Wenge would need less care.

That Korina link Freddy sent looked nice, what type of tone would that produce, would it be between Alder and Ash?

Clint,
Kornia is very similar to mahogany in tone. Here's how Warmoth describes it:

"Black Korina is usually a medium weight wood, but we occasionally get light weight pieces. It features a very handsome olive color with black streaking. Korina has a naturally waxy feel to it. Oil finishes work well on this wood. The tone is very similar to Mahogany with added mids."
