Thanks Joe, hmmm, it is a pretty wood, but I am not sure about the added mids.

I've only owned one bass made from Korina (black) and it really didn't have a mid heavy tone at all. It actually had very sweet and musical sounding mids. Having said that, the solid maple Roscoe produces a very nice sound. I've owned 2, one with the Bart/Aggie combo and one with the Nord/Audere combo. Both nice but the Nord/Audere is much more versatile sounding.
The maple body is a nice mix between the warm tone of the Spanish cedar and aggressive tone of ash. IMO it would match up well with the Amboyna top.

Gibson used korina for body woods on the early Flying V models from the '50s, which are highly prized by collectors and are widely considered to be some of the most sought-after guitars in the world. Chris Benevente used Black Limba as a substitute a lot, as have a lot of other bass and guitar builders that use a lot of mahagony (guitar makers making Les Paul clones, etc).

I've never speced a Roscoe with a korina/black limba body (I prefer swamp ash and Spanish cedar for Roscoe bodies, w/ alder as an alternate), but I have done a project with a black limba top. I think it is an attractive wood and had a proven history as a dependable tone wood.

I am a big fan of Amboyna, so it would have to have an Amboyna top. So, Roscoe Heads, give my your opinion on the rest of woods I should use.

Hey Clint,

I am excited for you in regards to your new Roscoe endeavor.

Like I have posted in the #5850 thread, I'm bonkers about my Alder body/Redwood top SKB with the Wenge wedge neck. Everybody that's heard it or played it has been impressed including a seasoned Lakland disciple that wanted to buy my bass after playing it for just a short while-I told him I could direct him to the folks in NC for a dealer and I was sure they could build another bass exactly like mine.

His response was classic, "I don't want a bass like it, I want this one."

Anyway, nuff said about my girl.

I had a thought early in my Roscoehead days about having a bass body made from Alaskan Yellow Cedar. I lived in Juneau for 14 years and became acquainted with this phenomenal wood that has been used in various traditional applications such as totem poles and Native flutes.

Alaskan Yellow Cedar is actually a part of the Cypress family with an average of 40 to 60 growth rings per inch. Dense yet lightweight. Also the gorgeous burls (which are not at all cheap or readily available) are highly sought after by the finest of Northwest carvers.

I believe Roscoe would build a bass for me with this wood if the right piece was available yet Gard wasn't too enthusiastic about trying unproven material. Understandably so. They know what has worked in the past and what they have available which is fine.

Myself, I would love to hear a bass body with this stuff. I don't know if any bass builder has ever used it but it certainly has all the physical characteristics to be a great body wood.

Just an idea-excuse the information overload. Have a blessed weekend.

moved too slow!!!

No Clint it wasn't me I pm'd and received the reply of hope "on hold pending payment, I will let you know if anything changes" so the prayers begin. Early the next mourning check TB even before washing my face I see you have 1 private message. I opened the messages and saw pm from the seller, I held my breathe, getting that feeling you got on your wedding day, just to read the reply of hurt "sold". So to that lucky buyer, by-the-way better be a RoscoeHead and reading this post. Best of wishes and I really hope you DON'T enjoy your bass, and look me up!!! All jokes aside God Bless and seems like you got a good one. I am interested in knowing the tones of that basses.

God Bless!!
