Guess who I ran into today???

So, I was at Bass Emporium (as I usually am on Tuesday afternoons), playing around on a *gasp* Pedulla Rapture through that new TC Electronic BG500 2X10" behemoth (it actually sounds really good, despite being the size of a hatchback), when this oddly familiar looking guy walks up and starts complimenting me.(?)

"Wow, that sounds really good!"
"Thanks! I'm just checking out this TC amp.. I kind of like it!"
"Yeah, that's killer!"

I was there to drop off my beloved #6113 (Bubinga-topped LG3005) for a cleaning/setup/different strings, so I figured while it was there, I'd play my own bass through the amp to get a better feel for it.

"Lemme grab my bass, that's the real test."
(I go grab my Roscoe)
"Wow! That's beautiful! What is that?"
"It's a Roscoe" I grinned.
(We talk shop for a good while, he asks me what kind of woods it's made out of, etc, etc.. Then I plug it in and start playing, still thinking this is just some friendly guy who had a LOT of questions...)
"Man, that thing sounds GREAT! Wow!"
"Thanks!"
"What kind of strings are on it?"
"They're DR Sunbeams, but this bass is actually here to get some LowRiders put on. They're hex-core, so they don't move around as much as the Sunbeams. I wanted something that sounded like these, but is stiffer so I can bring the action lower, etc, etc..."
(He laughs)
"That's exactly what I'm looking for too, bro."

He ended up buying some LowRiders , and when he walked off for a minute, I asked Chuck why this uber-friendly and inquisitive cat looked so familiar..

"Oh, that's Roy Estrada."
"HOLY CRAP!!!!!"

He hung around for a while longer, and told us a couple of stories about Frank while I just stood there, grinning like an idiot. What a cool experience!

Seriously, had I recognized him earlier... I just would have froze, and not been able to play anything...

I just feel honored to have met this guy, and to know that he's such a kind and genuinely cool human being.

(I won't lie... I'm also pretty stoked that he went out of his way to compliment my playing!)

Man, talk about synchronicity!

...I just began re-reading "The Real Frank Zappa Book" this weekend!

That's very cool Ryan, I always loved Zappa, and thought Estrada was a great player!

...we need to get him a Roscoe, right?

Definitely need to get him a Roscoe!

Or, you know... Like, I could give him mine and... No, wait... It's mine!

Okay, so he can have one like mine... I totally own rights to that combination, so the list of guys who can have one is pretty short!

Oh, and it can't have the same number as strings as mine!

Jimmy can have a 6.
Roy can have a 4.

Very cool story, Ryan. Probably good that you didn't recognize him right away. I'm sure it was great to hear some stories about Zappa.

I love Bass Emporium. Incredibly cool store, and you never know who you're going run into there.

I ran into Ed Friedland there, which I thought was a wild coincidence, until I found out that he teaches out of there these days.

Yeah, man.. It was just awesome. Roy's a trip, and I hope I get the chance to talk to him again. He's just a really cool, down to earth, extremely friendly (and funny!) individual. Meeting him totally made my day!

This is true! I've been fortunate enough to attend most of the clinics that have happened there over the past few years, but I'm always amazed at who you'll sometimes just bump into when they're casually shopping.

I guess that speaks volumes about what kind of store they are, huh?

As a founding member of Little Feat, Roys probably got some Lowell George stories too.
BE is definitely a fun place to go. Quite the candy store for bass players plus John and Chuck are great guys.

I bet he gets asked if he's Eric's brother A LOT when he introduces himself.

Ryan,

When I get back to Texas, I'll make my pilgrimage to BE. Hope to see ya there.

God Bless, Ray

Wow, I had no idea about Little Feat. That's awesome!

I've bought 99.9% of my gear from Bass Emporium over the past 4 years not only because of the amazing stuff they sell, but because John and Chuck are absolutely awesome. Before I ever spent a dime there, they treated me like the most important customer in the store.

A lot of places could learn from them!

Most definitely, Ray! Drop me a line when you're in my neck of the woods. We'll get drunk and spray paint on some stuff!

Best musician's autobiography ever, and one of the best insider's guides to the music biz. I just bought my 4th or 5th copy, after giving the previous ones away to people that needed to read it.

The stories about the London Symphony are classic, and there's plenty of wisdom to be gleaned from this book for any of you who haven't yet read it, whether you're a Zappa fan or not.
